Has any-one been to Lech. I have been looking around various sites and Lech looks lovely. But.........the hotels I have seen seem very expensive, are they all like that?

From what i can gather yes they are all very expensive in that area, but i think there are some cheaper alternatives?? Oberlech possibly? Not sure as i haven't been there! Have a feeling Tony_H has been but again not certain, but he may be useful in some of his wisdom on resorts!

I can't speak for what a UK tour operator charges but the actual accommodation isn't particularly expensive in Lech, when we lived in southern Germany it was my favourite weekend destination. There's any number of good pensions at reasonable rates, there's a couple of pretty grand hotels that are expensive and I've spoken to English who were staying there so it may be where the TO's go.

I do recall we used this place :

for Xmas a couple of times and it was excellent, it may not be the cheapest in the village though.

Rose, Lech is a lovely resort, quite pretty and varied on the slopes. The UK Tour Ops do seem to charge a lot for the hotels, I suggest that you try the Tourist Office and go direct. To travel you can get the train as far as St Anton, and then the Post Bus on to Lech AFAICR. :D

Under £500 for a catered chalet in St Anton 1st week in Jan including full area lift pass (part of a BOGOF deal) is fantastic value, and thats what I paid for 8 of us. But you will be hard pushed to get something as good a deal as that.
From what I have seen, Lech and Zurs have some lovely accommodation but it is particularly expensive. I would suggest your best bet would be to find a deal with a chalet through a tour op. Try Skiworld or catered-ski-chalets.co.uk as I have found them to be particularly good usually. However, it will obviously depend on how many of you, what time of year, what standard of chalet etc etc.
I intend to do several days skiing in the Lech area is it generally has the best snow. Looks fantastic.

Lech to St Anton would be a very long walk in ski boots.

Hi Rose

While it is many years since I skied Lech, I have very fond memories of it. It was my first time skiing and Lech had lovely long gentle blue runs that really gave me a taste for skiing. Not sure about more advanced skiing and generally, I think it would be regarded as a relatively easy resort, though perhaps this is because it is somewhat overshadowed by its near neighbour, St Anton. The fact that Ise rated it his favourite weekend destination suggests it has something for everyone!.

I can't offer any help on accommodation but it might be worth checking out pension type accommodation as Ise suggests - the hotels all seem to be around the 4* mark and are expensive. If that doesn't work out, you could always follow Tony's advice and stay in St Anton and then ski in Lech for a few days over the course of your trip. I seem to recall that it is actually possible to ski over to Lech from St Anton but I am not sure of this or of how difficult the route might be! But in any event, there are regular buses between the two resorts.

St Anton is itself a wonderful resort -fantastic mountains and beautiful traditional Austrian village (though it too would be considered reasonably expensive by Austrian standards and it now quite large - be careful about the location of your accommodation!). The apres ski is amazing but not compulsory .

BTW, I thought you were off to Finland this year - planning a second trip??? If so, lucky girl .
