Next year I'm planning an august holiday of a different sort.

My mind keeps changing, I've gone from summer skiing (4 people at £2,600 apiece in chile is a little steep I think!), to sailing to diving.

At the moment I'm thinking of a mountain holiday. It would be amazing to get a little skiing in so I'm looking at glaciers, ideally with a lake for sailing, etc and a good range of activities for us and the boys [12 and 8]. Kaprun seems to tick every box, whistler sounds extremely appealing but I wondered if anyone had any others ideas, thoughts or suggestions?

thanks :D

We have just been thinking of the same sort of thing, but going October. We are thinking of Hintertux may-be. I imagine it would still be ok in August. We just can not get local flights will have to travel from London.

The mountains are great all times of the year, October is fun, this week has varied a lot, here's two shots taken this week:

My advice is only to avoid the big tourist areas, basically if you've heard of it then think again ) Zermatt or Grindelwald are great but unless you're climbing 4000m peaks then all you're going to do is look at them. Go somewhere where you can get up the local mountains.

Loads of hiking routes on my blog :

Wow Ise those mountains look fab. I definately need to be looking at an October in the mountains. My worst nightmare holiday would be on a hot sunny beach. It has no appeal whatsoever. The mountains are beckoning.

Great photos' ise :D

Caron, I'm with ise on the choice of alpine summer resort. Most resorts have a huge range of summer activities, the hardest bit will be choosing where to stay, followed by tackling the problem of finding enough time to fit in all the activities. :D

Hi Caron,

We have had summer times Austrian Lake district, Fuschl am See, Halstadt, and in the mountains, of course Niederau.

Niederau costs are low, apartments from around 80/90 Euros per night. Catch the Gondola up the Marbachjoch, heaps of walks, along with good places to eat. Horse riding up the valley, mountain biking, great folk museum in Oberau.

Go stay at the Auhof, meet up with Jan and family. Very good summer location.

Choice of target location mostly depends upon where you fly into.
