Let us be friendly.

Let us enjoy each other's "company"

One option in keeping this site "friendly" is to share each other's "moments of weakness", moments of silliness" , moments of "faux pas"! That is let us laugh a little, not take these postings too seriously!

So search in your closet of memories,,, that moment! We all have them!

Here is mine.

I love everything about skiing. Of course the carves down the hill,,but going up the chair has it moments. This is a story about such a ride.

You never know who you will meet on a chair. Those ski cloths hide the true identity of skiers. You never know what will happen on a chair! ( at least with me). You see I am a tad of a joker. I love to intellectually tease my fellow skiers,,push their minds to galaxies they have never visited. Some times the trick is played on me!

Great sunny day in March. The Snick smell is everywhere! Smiles and good cheer eevrywhere. I am skiing with a "security" man who looks the part. 6'5", 200 cm tall, 190 lbs, and handsome with long, long blondish hair, a five day blondish beard ( he was doing some undercover work)! Picture a rough Viking with a smile and you have him!

On we go on the quad and what do I see? Two young ladies in the 20,s ( why do all my bad moments involve women)! My smile gets bigger! Did I forget to say that this Viking was single?
Did I forget to say that I am very happily married with a great wife!

The small talk begins with great sun, great weather, great skiing, then we get to serious business,,,,,getting those two girls introduced to my friend ( who is a little shy)! As a I try to discuss "social" ways to meet, or introduce the topic of "what women want in a man",,,I get a frosty reaction! Then a few meters up,,,,, an out and out "brush off"! Silence.

Then I realize the mistake I had made. Dammmmmmm! "she thinks I am "cruising" her" I think. I must get out of this. So I turn to face her and with a straight face I say, "You really think I am "cruising" you! You think I want to meet you after the ski day?"

Yes comes the curt reply! "And my boyfriend is waiting at the top. So there!" she lets out between tight lips!

I should have stopped there, but I am who I am. A challenge is a challenge, I had to get upper hand before to the top! "Is he handsome" I casually commented paused for effect then continued with, "you see I am gay,,,,,," I love handsome men!

A bomb could not have made more effect on that chair! My fellow skier ( the most male of all males) sputtered, chooked and lost his breath. The girls for the first time looked at me,,really looked at me! Searching for those "signs"!

I finished with ,,,,"can I meet him"! Voilà deed done!

She was off the lift like a rocket,,,sailed by her boyfriend and I heard a whisper, "quick let's get out of here"!!!

My friend and I were alone now and he now tells me that with me skiing is an adventure never to be missed,,but could I be careful!

Fast track 3 months.

Ha,,,you thought that ski lift was the embarrasing moment! No no it gets better!

I am in front of a class of university students. First day all keen, all bright. Then who walks into the class!!!

Yes,,,,that girl! Our eyes meet. We both relive that ski lift session. Not sure what her feeling were,,,but I knew what mine were! This was going to be a long long session!

Now for the happy ending! (and a lesson to you all men, to think before speaking).

Seems that boyfriend "disappeared" several weeks later.
That girl got an A as final grade and my son!

Now I have to relive that scene everytime my son wants to "make a point"! That is why if ever you ride up with me in a ski lift and I am very very quiet,,,,,,it is because just beside me is my son and grandson!

I must behave!

PS
To add fuel to the fire,,,every year on the date of that event, I get a "special" post card from a "ski friend" who now travels all over the world, for an agency but who remembers my most embarassing ski moment!

Pavel, that was funny :!: :D Thanks for the "laugh of the day". I'm glad it turned out as well as it did!

In my area I often get phone calls for others of the same name. There are 4 of us in the area. One is an accountant.

I was on the chair lift with a girl of about 13 or 14 years old one day. She was with a school group and was quite talkative. This made for what became an interesting ride to the top. She went to school in my area and had a horse at a stable where my neighbour does as well. I asked her her name as I would tell my neighbour I had met her on this ski day. It turned out this girl and I have the same last name and when I told her my name was "Mike" she looked like she had seen a ghost :!: She said that was her father's name as well. I said "oh .. the accountant?" At which point she almost jumped off the chair! I continued to "freek-out" this child by telling her I often get phone calls for him.

Not an embarassing moment -- but an interesting one. It is a small world!

Brilliant stories!!!!

I don't have any stories that match Pavels, my 'embarrassing' moment was far more common place! My first day skiing, we had been side stepping up the nursery slope all day, then our instructor decided we were ready to get the button lift up to the top, explained how to get on, and off we went. When we had finished a friend and I decided we wanted to go again, so went for our first lone lift up the nursery slope.

Being only the second time, I was very conscious of not holding people up, so quickly grabbed the button lift, ready to go, only I forgot the most important thing......keep you skis parallel!!! (You can see where this is going!) One ski goes up the side of the lift station, the other goes over my head as I land spectacularly flat on my back.

Obviously my skis come off, only my friend is laughing so hard, she cant stand up straight, let alone help me get my skis back on, and not realising lift etiquette, I stand with the lift stopped- getting my skis back on, while my friend (and the rest of the queue) are doubled over laughing!!! So much for not holding people up!!!

Looking back, I would have loved to see myself fall, my friend insists it was spectacular to see!!!

Pavel: Great thread and a welcome dose of self-depreciating humour!

I can think of lots of times I’ve looked and felt like a complete moron  but this one is easy to tell:

I used to work for a well known ski-slope operator in the UK who owned 5 or 6 slopes (I forget exactly how many) and one of the compensations was that we got to have our own “personal” uniforms.

On holiday in the Alps I used to wear my “work” uniform partly because it was very hard wearing and partly because if you looked closely it said “Instructor” ;)

One day on a long double-chair lift ride I was deep in conversation with my fellow rider when he mentioned my ski suit. He said he thought it looked very smart and enquired about the “Instructor” motif. Needless to say I went on at length describing the work I did and how what it was like to work for the company. After listening for some time he asked my name and having told him I felt I ought to respond in kind. His answer left me cold, “My name, oh yes, John Nike! I’m very glad you enjoy working for me!”

I’m sure that the lift company would have understood if I had jumped to my fate … I’m just glad I avoided telling some of the stories that would’ve prematurely ended my employment :D

Happy days,

Jan

Not terribly embarrassing, but rather amusing...

Our local ski hill held a carving cup style race. They had purchased the proper buoys for gates and the rules were no speed suits and no poles :-). They opened the race to snowboards as well (running at the same time), so I was torn as to which to use. The solution was to enter on both.

Luckily the chalet is close to the finish and the lift back up just down a short hill. After each run I had to ski out of the finish enclosure up to the chalet, whip off my board or skis, run just inside and switch boots (ski to board or board to ski). Then run out, grab my board or skis and run to the lift, putting board or skis on in the lift line. Hopefully making it back up before my next run.

I made it through all three rounds doing four runs per heat against everyone else doing two. Needless to say after doing this about ten times, I got it mixed up on one occasion. I threw my ski down at the end of the lift line and as I went to put my boot in, I realised I should have had a snowboard for these boots. I was getting exhausted with all the running and people must have wondered who the idiot was madly running back up the hill to the chalet with his skis. Luckily they let me run out of order. There were many moments in the rush that I had to double check what I was riding as I got off the lift, getting off sideways on skis would really have been embarrassing. Most exhausting days skiing/riding I have ever done.

because I'm so inclined .....

I got dragged up a T-Bar on the Feldberg by my feet, have no idea how it happened, luckily I was not hurt, but my friend could not say as much as he pulled a muscle laughing and was in agony all afternoon.

I ski'd straight off a red in Verbier in March. It was really foggy, you could literally only see 5 metres ahead. I was following the piste markers along the edge, the only thing was that as I ski'd in the same direction, the piste made a sharp right hand turn and a went straight between the markers and off the edge of the piste, where I fell about 30 feet. Luckily it was a sheer drop into tons of fresh powder, and not the edoge of the mountain of into a load of rocks. Once I landed and realised I was ok, I began to laugh so much that I couldnt get back up the incline and on to the piste again. It took me about 20 minutes in the end, and I was absolutely shattered, and sweating like a pig!
My daughter and the other lady who was skiing with me were at the top killing themselves, having been behind me when I went off. They said they thought I was trying to commit suicide and just went right off the edge like a lunatic. I would like to have seen it myself.
