Hi again. Has anyone been skiing in Jasna. We are going at the end of March early April. I live in Australia. Just wanted a few tips. Ski hire, lift passes. Have only skied in Australia so its a bit of an Adventure. Has anyone got any info on the place.

I am an Englishman who now lives at Jasna. It is the largest ski area in central Europe with a vertical of over 1000m, and 27 lifts. The terrain is suitable for all abilities from cruisey blues to freeride zones that you only see in the films (hiking required).
The Jasna valley es very pretty; it is a national park and the authorities have minimised the impact of the resort on the beauty of the place.

The local town of Liptovsky Mikulas serves the ski area; here are aplenty of bars and restaurants that are very good and very cheap. If you stay up at Jasna itself then you are somewhat limited to few, spaced out eateries.

Snowfall is like most Northern Hemisphere resorts; March get the accumulation of the entire season plus a hint of spring in the air.... Season generally ends April 15th.

If you would like any more info please ask...

Hi Dan

Sounds interesting.
Where can you get cheap flights to, and how far are these airports from the resorts?

Do you recommend car hire, or take a package and use their transfers?

Whats the cost of a ski pass for 6 days, and what mileage on the pistes is there?

Cheers

There are 21km of prepared pistes at Jasna (Chopok) North, with some more over the back (Chopok South) - km unknown, but 1x4man chair and several draglifts.

A 6 day skipass for the entire area costs £85. A 5 out of 7 day pass is also available.

The nearest airport is Poprad-Tatry. This is an easy 40min drive from Jasna.
Another option is to fly to Bratislava and jump on the train to town. It is easy, pleasant, and scenic - but it will add 3-4 hours to your journey time.

Hertz are available at both airports but you will struggle to get up the mountain road without local plates (to minimise traffic in Jasna itself) - a large car park is situated halfway up the mountain road from where shuttle buses then run.

There are only a few English operators in Jasna. I own and run a chalet (www.chaletslovakia.com) with all the usual transfers, hot breakfasts etc... and have some spaces available this winter. The other operators are full to my knowledge.

It's a great place for a budget getaway - the restaurants and bars are very good value - with some outstanding offpiste possibilities when it snows...

Cheers Dan, just spend the last hour or so looking into it a bit more, including flights to Poprad from Luton.

Can you give us some indication as to when the best times to go for skiing might be traditionally? Is it an early season resort or more of a spring time place to go? I would obviously be interested in a trip when the snow is best!

We've heard March and Feb are traditionally the best times to come. But it depends what kind of conditions you like to board. Last year there were nice sunny days and mash potatoe rides up until the end of April.
