Hi, just wondering what the skiing conditions are like in Niederau. Is there much snow there at the moment.

Had a Christmas email yesterday from a friend in Niederau. She says the conditions are very good. The Wildschoenau web site shows 1.3m, but that will be at the top of the Schatsberg in Auffach. From this I would expect the Marbachjoch to be over a metre deep. And at this time of year, the north facing runs normally remain below freezing most of the time.

Unfortunately, there looks to be a slight warming next week, but the conditions should hold. The piste machine men are among the best at preparation.

Say hello to Maria and Herbert in the Bichlwirt from me, I will be there 2 weeks in mid Jan and two weeks at the end of season.

Hi,

I'm not sure if you meant to post similar threads but for safety here’s a copy of what I said in the other post:

Hi Blackbrook

The lifts opened on Saturday and there have been almost no people here (I think only one of the main hotels has been open). We currently have perfect conditions although due to the lack of skiers the lift company has decided to keep one of the runs that historically wears thin closed and dump loads of man-made snow on them to really build up the base. It has been averaging about -8 degrees most days and the sun has been shining. It hasn’t snowed since last Friday but the snow is still on the trees.

One of the black pistes has been left unpisted and I was skiing on that run in the powder yesterday, it was still soft and fluffy with no crust. Incidentally, I was still able to find large areas of the piste that were totally untracked and that was on Monday, after the lifts had been open for 2 days (gives you some idea how quite it is here at the moment!)

Although we aren’t expecting any more snow at the moment this isn’t currently a problem the pistes are in fantastic shape.

If you would like to have a regular update PM me and I will let you know when things change.

Jan

Hi all,

Arriving 19th January for week.

This is the first time we will have had a chance to actually ski in Niederau although I have visited the village a couple of times before. The wife and I are experienced skiers (Kitzbuhel, Westendorf, Soll etc., France and Switzerland), but we are not particularly good. I never really converted properly onto carving skis, while the boss has lost some of her confidence in recent years and we are a bit too long in the tooth for group lessons. So, any recommendations for a few hours personal instruction?

Also, I think the Hahnenkamm Men's Downhill is on the 20th. Anyone heading over to Kitzbuhel for the race?

Finally, what's the best bet for apres for a couple of ageing indie rockers with far too many Tyrolean evenings under our belt than can possibly be healthy.

Looking forward to the 19th,

Cheers,
Stubbsy

Will be there a couple of days before you. It's going to be another great season. Don't worry about carving, there are still plenty of heel pushers around. Re the boss's confidence, is she on longish skis? If so go a couple of sizes shorter. If you are taking own skis, it may be worth hiring a short pair for a day. We met a woman last year on 205s, and quickly nicknamed her Lady Longskis!

A private lesson might be about £30 an hour, and is worth while, suggest try this on day 2, so you know which runs you feel confident on. There are two schools, red & blue. Respectfully suggest the red, not that I am biased of course!

Re the Hahnenkamm, you can get the post bus to Worgl, then the train to Kitts. Or you can take a taxi to Kirchberg, buy a day pass and ski over to Kitts.

Finally, indie music came after my time. If you want drink'n'dance music there is the Cave Bar ~ it has a DJ. In the village square there O'Malleys, Irish music.
At the top end of the village, handy if you are guests at the Harfenwirt, is my local, the Bichlwirt. This is a 500 year old stuble, full of character. Herbert plays Harp most nights, but not as you imagine harps ~ Tyrolean, Beatles, Manchester folk tunes, Greek, more Beatles.......

Good luck, maybe see you in the Bichl.....
