I haven't skied in 25 years. I use to ski advanced intermediate verging on expert but could not quite handle the double diamond runs. The other posts discussing the difference between carving and skiing parallel are great.

For those who know the difference in practice could you let me know what to expect the first time on the slope?

I have a pair of Dynastar Skicross66 with Rossignol Axial 2 binding and a Sally Performa boot cranked forward.

I use to ski on Kazama's with a Look N77 binding, then skied on Dynastar FPS Equipe along side a 200cm very stiff Blizzard, a Koflach SXL boot. The Dynastar was far too soft for me.

Thanks for any advice,

OldNevada

Oldnevada,

May I suggest you first find a nice quiet center like Owl' Head and during week take Lake Chair!

Forget all that; up/down (unweigh), rotate then set edges! Old ski technique.

You have great new equipment so learn to set edges with knees and hips!

Hope this will help you.

thanks! I guess memory will start me off setting and un-weighting which will be inconsistent with the ski design and cause me to over-turn and crank an ankle...... will keep what you say in mind. Thanks for the advice about Owl's Head too!

Have lots of fun!

PS. You might consider "shortening" ski poles also !

Ta Pavel,

Actually, I am relying on my poles less and less. The boards are carving beautifully and make the mogels joyful to ski. Easier to ski in them actually. Don't need the old jetstix anymore! remember those? OldNev

Hi OldNev,

Pavel's technique description is spot on, assuming that you are upward unweighting, which I am pretty sure you are.

However, you mentioned using Jetstix, which I date as 1971! And you would have used them for an extreme form of downward unweighting, simply called "Jetting"

How do I know this?, Well mine were bolted onto the back of my Kastingers with 8mm bolts. The tops came to about 2 " below the knee crease. (Same season as the under the bed carpet inner soles)

So, with either old style skis or carvers, and on your normal boots, technique for downward unweighting ~ sink down (unweigh)& pole plant, swivel knees across, push the skis away and inside hip forward. Best performed on bumps.

Its still a good turn technique to have in the armory.

As for jetting, I should never have done that, I still attribute a proportion of the dodgy knee to Jetstix use. Plus 20,000 miles of road and track running, several 50 mile fell races, and about 140ish weeks of none-jetstix skiing.

Thanks, those are fond memories at Mont Orford and Jay.

Now that I am getting my sense of balance back, I fondly recount the envy I had of those early freestylers that use to come shooting out of the glades prologued by a shrieking yodel, legs bent back at the knees and skis tucked up behind their back as they took air coming on to the main trail. (a 360 reverse?)

Do you folks have any advice as to how I can learn that kick trick? Always wanted to learn that without breaking my neck.... or my skis. :XD:
