el nino? la nina? hole in the o-zone you've all heard the theory's but who's right and who's wrong

all i know is that this year looks like its going to be a good one!! ohhhhh yessss :D

:D,hi the weather in the alps seems to revolve round in a ten or twelve year cycle, one year Austria will have the best snow, the next France etc.
Technically we are still in an ice age,but i suspect the real reason for all the global warming miss-information from the G8 governments is because America's,Englands,Germany's,France economies are going to be put under extreme pressure from the emergence of growth in China and Africa in the next ten years. So if they can spread panic about the world ending because of fossil fuels etc,and mannage to get the use of these restricted in the most polluting countries (China especially) then this will hinder the Chinese economic growth). An example of the lies and mis-information about so called global warming-the picture in the papers of the two polar bears clinging to that small iceberg with the caption saying"Polar bears facing exrinction because all the ice is melting due to carbon emmissions",the people responsible for this picture and headline forgot conveniently to mention that it was taken in the middle of the summer!.
Also this is great way of raising taxes,if you can make the poeple scared, you can manipulate them!. :D

I dont think the weather operates in 10 or 12 year cycles or it can be accurately forcast as to where is going to have good snow France in 2007 Austria in 2008 etc. It's just "one of those things". I do believe the earth operates on a much larger time frame however, juts now its warming up, and in say, 20k years, it will cool down again!?

Some of the comment in the press about the fantastic season start is a bit overstated. It's been pretty good and a relief after last year but it's not as good round here (the plateau) as a couple of years back. The various tourist offices are quite to happy to say it's the best season start ever and lazy reporters are happy to repeat it.

The size of some snowfalls, especially Austria and the Swiss/Austrian border, has been record breaking of course, it's something that's measured and recorded and easy to compare. That's probably formed the basis of these claims about record breaking conditions.

We did actually expect it to snow, it's why we all went out in November and fitted winter tyres and the commune went out and stuck up all the snow poles and brushed off their snow plough :D

That's not to say it's not good of course, no one's going to go bang on the tourist office door and complain that conditions are only fantastic instead of the best ever :D

So much snow that in some places though that it's caused problems, in Morgins a tree got uprooted and hit the lift necessitating a rescue of 4 people and the lift was out of action for two days, a photo (from Tele Morgins, with permission) here :

No one can explain the weather patterns with certainty and in an understandable method.

As recently as October's long range forecasts, it was supposed to be a warmer than normal winter in Nova Scotia - now it is turning out to be the coldest December in at least 20 years - and the month is only half over.

The normal temperature for today is 2C and at the time of this writing it is -8C :!:

But the good news is that the local ski hills open tomorrow and Saturday for a new season :!:

God bless the cold air

It seems to be an ok start to the season but let's face it anything will be fantastice when compared to last season. Fingers crossed the temps don't rise across Europe like they did last year.
I would have got away with it if it wasn't for those pesky kids!
