Hi everyone,
Myself and some of the guys are having 5 days skiing in Mayrhofen cg 20/01/2008. I plan to drive to Mayrhofen from Munich airport but have no idea re road conditions and wether or not I will need snow tryes/snow chains on the hire car. I would be most grateful for any assistance. Also any chat on how good Mayrhofen is as we've never skied it before.
Many Thanks
Andrew

Much too early to say for sure what the road conditions will be like, but you should definitely be prepared to use chains in late January. Your hire car will almost certainly be fitted with snow tyres at that time, which will cope with most snowy roads, but do make sure when booking.
Keep an eye on our Snow Forecast for Mayhrhofen - which is currently looking a bit tasty! 8)

Hello Andrew,
I get back from Mayrhofen on the 19th of Jan. Probably not enough time to give you the low down when I get back. Haven't been there myself yet but i've not heard too many negative comments on the place. I have heard however that you should aim to get up early to beat the queues to the gondolas.

Cheers for this,
I too have heard nothing bad bar the potential queues.
Fingers crossed for loads of snow early to mid Jan then!

Hi David
Looks like I go home the day before you get there.
The drive from Munich is not to bad, except that you will find awful queues on the road leading to and from the motorway interchange near Innsbruck at weekends.
As for the resort, I like it so much, this is my 5th visiy. The slopes are wide and varied, big ski area, great lifts, and if you go at the right time of day, no queues anywhere.
I suggest you have a warm up on the Ahorn first morning, and then hit the Penken. For a full day, get down the back of the Penken into the bowl, and head across to the 150 man cable car, and then ski down the back of Rastkogel, where its less crowded, sunny, and wide open.
For a decent drink, pop into the Happy End directly opposite the Penkenbahn gondola directly after a days skiing.
I am sure you will find you go back again to Mayrhofen.
As for tyres, Jan 2006 was the heaviest snow for 30 years, and no one was using snow chains. The roads are kept very tidy everywhere. You should be fine without them, the village isnt at a higih altitude.
Enjoy.

Only a small point but it’s possibly worth mentioning. Motorway driving in Austria is paid for by a little sticker known as a Vignette, these cost very little, currently €7.60 for 10 days but if you are caught without one you will have to pay a heavy fine …
Coming from Munich you will be able to buy one from the motorway services at the boarder (Kufstein).
You might think that your hire car will come with a prepaid Vignette but it’s my experience that this never happens.
Also, depending on your hire company, make sure you ensure you are provided with a Hi-Visibility vest. It’s compulsory to carry one of these in Austria.
Happy motoring,
Jan

Was in Mayerhofen right at the end of the season, and allthough the snow was not the best (apart from on the Glacier) I had a great time. The people are really friendly, the apres-ski very lively and the standard of accomodation is great. Like everyone else mentions get up early, it's always nice to be on the hill first anyway!
