which one has a better chance of good snow?
we need to arrive from paris and it seems val d'isere has direct TGV (bourg st maurice) but chamonix's station (st gervais) is quite far away from chamonix with no public transport (bus) to get to chamonix.

Well, both will be likely to have good snow. Bourg St Maurice is about 1 hour away from VDI by public bus. Chamonix has a public train service from St Gervais Les Bains, Le Fayet, which is where the TGV arrives.
I would be most surprised if this does not run this winter as I have seen the train running through Chamonix on many occasions. The rail ticket costs about £7 single at the moment. Perhaps it may be worth contacting the Tourist Office in Chamonix to ascertain that the train service will run before taking a final choice.

Yes, it goes regularly all through the winter from St Gervais to Chamonix train station (in the town centre) and on through the villages.
The swiss site is better for trains than the french one for checking times.

There's often special Snow train services from Paris to Chamonix in winter.
Both should have good snow then. Early season has been looking great so far in Chamonix, I imagine Val d'isere's pretty good too. Just depends which you prefer really, they're both good bets. No prizes for guessing my personal choice but that's just me!

Chamonix has excellent snow- look at the webcams on www.chamonet.com today! I have got the train a few times and never had a problem. Even if you get a taxi- which there are plenty of, it is not that expensive. The train is excellent and you get the extra bonus of some truely amazing scenery!
