Depends what you want.

Samoens is more picturesque and quieter than Morzine - less Brits too.

Morzine has turned into a party town - loads of English/Irish pubs - very much like 'little Britain' so if you are into getting lashed it's probably the place to go.

Both offer access to high level skiing in either Flaine or Avoriaz so should be snow sure at xmas.

I was in Samoens last season and (I don't know Avoriaz) but forget about Samoens... Slow and chairlifts, terrible slopes (groomed once a week), and the access to Flaine and return is terrible with lots of spots with only one slope connecting two areas... so even worst slopes. If you realy decide to go to the Grand Massif it's better to stay in Flaine close to the best slopes. The village is not so beautifull as Samoens but to ski is much better.

On the other hand, friends of mine rave about Samoens, and head over there for a treat when they have had enough of Morzine....
aparently it is especially good for off piste, but having never been I'm not sure!

Also heard people complaining tha Morzine isn't party enough  - so I guess it is all down to personal preference....
www  oopalley - self catered, hosted accommodation in Morzine.

correction:

"...slow and old chairlifts. ..."

(one of the chairs was made of wood, can you believe it? like a garden bench)

As I said before I don't know Morzine, but this... together with the messed up slopes... Never again.

It is worth pointing out that the link over to Flaine from Samoens has been widened and improved for this season - probably after lots of complaints!

Try staying in Sixt Fer a Cheval - much more traditional than either Samoens or Morzine and still with great access to the rest of the Grand Massif. The skiing at Sixt is small but lovely - and usually very quiet. I can recommend a place to stay if you want.
