We did that last year, we waited for a bus for Chamonix which didn't come, so got on the bus to Aosta - get your ticket from the ticket office first. Can't remember how long the bus trip was, but think the buses run every hour. Then you have to walk across / under the railway to get to the Gondola, bit of a trek in ski boots  , then a nice 20 minute ride to the top.
Had THE most fantastic skiing in my life. Blue sky, perfect slopes, not too many people about. Wonderful.
Then we caught the just about last gondola down (which kept stopping) and was very tight for the bus, so had to run for it, still in ski boots).
It was a long day, but well worth it. We were there last week in February.
I don't know if there's a locker so you can wear street shoes and carry boots, but that would have been sensible, if only we knew we were going there.
