Brits holidaying over Christmas in the Canary Islands off the West Coast of Africa were able to enjoy a White Christmas with fresh snow, …if they close to climb the Teide volcano on Tenerife.
The 3,718-metre (12,198 ft) high volcano is in fact the highest point in Spain and the highest point above sea level of all the islands in the Atlantic. In fact measured from its base below sea level it is twice as high again at around 7500m, the third biggest of its kind behind two volcanos in Hawaii.
Teide get snow cover quite regularly and around a decade ago a fake ski resort website was created for it: www.teideski.com
Although there has not been a lot of fresh snow in Europe over the past month, some of the biggest snowfalls have been at another remote Spanish ski centre, Sierra Nevada, Europe's most southerly major resort and located on the highest peak of mainland Spain. It currently has a 1.5m base on upper runs and is fully open.
