Hi there, off to Innsbruck at half term and I'm looking for a resort not too far to drive to take my little boy who is disabled and would like a go at mono skiing. He can walk but not too far as he has extreme low muscle tone, he is also sight and hearing impaired. His twin sister and older sister ski as do dad and I. We normally take it in turns to sledge with him, so for once it would be really nice if we could all ski together. So I guess I'm looking for an adaptive ski school with an instructor to take charge of him and his equipment. I've found a couple in Austria but they are all too far away from Innsbruck which is our base for the week. Any help, advice, web links would be very much appreciated.

Hi Darcicles. It is probably too late for this season, but Niederau is one of the main centres that Disability Snowsport utilise. I ski with many of them every season. They were there last week, and will be there this week and next week. Worth bearing in mind for next year. They use a high quality hotel, the Sonnschein.

DS are a well organised lot. I think they fly into Salzburg. Each disabled person has a qualified adaptive skier, and a volunteer ski assistant. All the lift attendants are trained to operate the lifts to suit the particular needs, may it be a sit ski or other need.

Post Script: I have put a note on BASI, will just see if there is a response.

I would check to see if Seefeld has an adaptive instructor. You might also phone DS, based in Aviemore who seem to do most of the organising. They may be aware of someone to meet your needs. I will put a message on the BASI website, and see if it comes up with anything.

Dear Dave

Thank you so much for all the information and postings!

I think that's a really good idea to give DS a call. Schlick 2000 website has info on it but they haven't replied to me which is a shame as only 15 minutes outside of Innsbruck.

Appreciate your advice and help.

Denise

I have had a response from BASI, from a lady Adaptive Instructor. I will PM you the contact, although I guess you may have made a location commitment by now.

And so it came to pass.

The Adaptive ski instructor made the young lad's day. I have watched the video, and they skied over some bumpy stuff ~ not easy in a sit ski.
