Serre Chevalier - honest current conditions ...please?

I am travelling to Serre Chevalier this Sunday, January 17th for a week's skiing (hopefully) - an honest report of the current situation would be very much appreciated.

You've picked a good week...

Top lifts are shut this morning due to avalanche risk as they've had a lot of snow on the mountain. Rain/Snow line was quite high over the weekend but dropped to resort level last night and should stay there. More snow forecast this week and next week is expected to be cold with regular clear skies and a little more snow into the bargain.

One of my favourite places to ski, I know the area inside out now. Never had bad snow even during a warm March trip. Have a great time

FYI -

Briancon sector gets the most sun and therefore can get patchy and slushy quicker.

Chantmerle sector has lovely tree skiing, and the 2 fabulous red parallel runs beneath the Aiguillette chairlift. Pylons and the Luc Alphond black runs are fabulous, not particularly difficult but fast and steep in places, nice and wide to carve fast.

Villeneuve sector has some fab runs high up above Frejus and Aravet, don't miss any out! And do the Casse de Boeuf black mid morning once its had a little sun on it but before everyone else has carved it up. Same with the Cucumelle, hit it earlyish.

Monetier sector - became my favourite after a couple of trips, cracking tree skiing, and you must do the high Yret and Cibuoit chairs and run back down. Try and find the Peyra-Juana cafe right around the far left hand side of the lower Monetier sector, it has a fabulous sun terrace for a mid morning coffee, and they do amazing food. Tiny little place, you will see the big OUVERT sign as you ski down to it.

I believe the lift pass from Alpe d'Huez covers Serre Che for a day too. Does anyone have any knowledge of whether it is easy to get to Serre Che for the day from AdH, as I'll be there later in the season ?

Normally its a straight forward drive one the Col du Lautaret, but this season they've had to rebuild part of that road after a landslide which has put some restrictions in place on the road. However, travel across first thing (and I am talking 6.30am) and you should beat any traffic issues. Its about an hour normally, but don't forget you've got a million hairpins to negotiate getting down from ADH first! To save time, park in Monetier and take the lifts up from there, could cut 20 mins at least off, and its easier getting back at the close of play as you're right up the valley there.
