Hi all,

I have booked my train for a week at Easter but am not sure which resort to go to.

I am looking for maybe a smaller resort, possibly with access to a spa, but with fewer crowds.

I have no interest in nightlife, except somewhere nice for aperitif !!

and obviously, with good snow!

Anybody know where that is?

cheers
Jasmin

If you've booked your train to Bourg Saint Maurice, and if you don't want hours of driving, you've got Tignes, Val d'Isere, La Rosiere, Les Arcs, Peisey-Vallandry or La Plagne.
There is a nice hotel or appartement in vallandry with spa it's MGM complex, I don't know their website but should be easy to find, it's called aswell l'Oree des Cimes.

If you're looking for a smaller resort near to BSM then it's either Ste Foy or La Rosiere all the others nearby are mega resorts. I'd chose La Rosiere but I'm biased we have a chalet there. it's got a greta snow record especially for late season snow, it's friendly, the skiing is interesting, it's linked to La Thuile in Italy which gives it a very different feel to just about every other French resort and it's terrific value for money. Ste Foy on the other hand has none of these attributes but you will meet lots of Brits.

Thanks for your replies,

David, you mention Ste Foy, but I get the impression you are not actually recomending it. Why not Ste. Foy?

I had another recomendation for Ste Foy and it is smaller than places like Tignes and Val, as suggested by Snowgirl.

Is there still snow in Ste. Foy April? are you saying it is not freindly?!

I have no car so will probably stay in one place. So need doorstep skiing to satisfy each day. The problem is finding self catering for only 2 people - so far, I have not found that in La Rosiere, or Ste Foy - any recomendations welcome!

Also, if anyone has the web address for the MGM in Vallandry as when I google it I only find tour company deal and I would rather go direct!

I am off to St Foy on Sat (20th Jan), There is a good amount os snow on the tops at the minute and I am led to believe that it keeps snow for much of the season. The advantage with St Foy is that it is great for off piste but is also very close to the larger ski area of Tignes and Val. However there are only about 5 lifts there.

But if you have no car, getting to these places will mean that you have to rely on the public transport. Not sure what that is like as we always drive.

Jazzmaster, here is the website for the MGM residence
L'Orée des Cîmes **** Luxe
Route des Espagnoles 73210 PEISEY-VALLANDRY, tél. 04 79 04 38 00, fax : 04 79 04 32 09, Courriel : oree@mgm-immobilier.fr, internet : http://www.cgh-residences.com, 102 appartements, ouvert : HIVER, Résidence de luxe.

I know there is also a Club Med at the same place.
There is a lift (the grizzly) just couple of metres away from both of them and a nice english bar Mont Blanc. You can also walk to a lots of shop and restaurant a bit further down, so no car, no problem.
Enjoy

jazzmaster, we used to go to Ste Foy whenever there was fresh powder, it's very small but there is some terrific off-piste and it used to be a good hideaway. It's now been colonised by all the Brits who missed out on Val d'Isere and think that Ste Foy will be the next big thing, think identikit chalets, more Caterham than Courchevel. I haven't skied there for 2 yrs now and the last time I was there, I heard more English than French on the slopes. In fact it's just about the only resort I know where you won't hear any French on the slopes. That's not what I go to France for so I'm happy to ski in a resort that still retains its character, has better facilities, more sunshine and one of the best snow records in the Alps.

Thanks all,

I went to Montchavin at Xmas as a first time skier and had to learn pretty much on ice and very thin snow. I did like the size of the town though.

So this time I really only want to ski - I am not fussed about bars/restuarants /sightseeing or languages spoken, I just want better snow than I had at xmas and am worried that smaller lower resorts may be a risk for my money. Also, being in education I am forced to holiday in peak season so want somewhere quiet and away from crowds and queues - which people say Ste. Foy is.

But, from what I gather here, Ste Foy is only good for access to other places or off piste?

And thanks for Vallandry website Snowgirl - it is all too big for just the 2 of us though - why is all skiing accomodation geared towards large families and big groups and not couples!!
