Well, it's been in the forecast all week and got started this afternoon...
A fairly major snow/rain (depending on your altitude) storm across a wide area of the Northern and Central Alps is now in progress. The snow line is expected to vary between 2000m and 1300m generally, possibly lower in places and later in the week, with considerable volumes of precipitation.
Above the snow line should see 50cm+ of new snow in many places, or 2 inches of rain lower down... the snow line, and it's evolution, will vary considerably depending on local effects and exactly how the weather systems interact.
Depending on where you're looking, this could be season-ending on the lowest slopes or totally epic above the snow line...
However... there will be strong winds in places, and we may see significant amounts of wet, heavy snow falling on already soft and unstable slopes - so we will see some big (and dangerous) avalanches over the next 72 hours. Take extra care and really, absolutely, heed local advice before venturing anywhere other than marked and secure slopes! Swiss authorities are already predicting a "critical" avalanche outlook and we expect risk levels will be extreme in much of the affected area for several days!
On-piste, in the right locations however, could be utterly brilliant later this week!

A few locations have already had 50cm... so could be looking at double this over 3 days... 8)
