Zermatt 'Closer' Thanks to New Train Services

J2SkiNews posted Dec-2014

A new half-hourly service that's started this winter means Zermatt is quicker to reach by train than ever before, the resort claims.

The new services introduce by The Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn increases the daily tally of trains on the route by a quarter, from 60 to 75, and Zermatt says that new connections made possible by the additional services means for guests arriving from Paris/Geneva and the French part of Switzerland should find their journey is 30 minutes shorter.

Along with the new services which began this week, new train compositions have also gone into operation. The new trains offer air conditioning, a new customer information system, level boarding with wide doors, wheelchair compartments and handicapped accessible toilets.

Are you saying that the train journey from Geneva ('the French speaking part of Switzerland') to Zermatt is now 30 minutes quicker than before?

the journey itself (time spent on a train) will likely be the same, but connection times will be shorter.

They have increased the frequency of the trains running from Visp to Zermatt from every hour to every half hour and introduced new rolling stock. Since the opening of the new Lötschberg tunnel in 2007 there has been a 45% increase in the number of passengers travelling between Visp and Zermatt so an increase in capacity was well overdue. Trains leave Geneva airport for Visp every half hour so previously some travellers had a half hour wait on Visp station.
