i will be visiting switzerland with family during last week of december just for 5 days, i have a swiss rail pass, does this take you anywhere where i can ski for free as i am just a beginner but i have done skiing and snowboarding in dubai many times. i am looking for a place which is more kids friendly and for beginners and also not too expencive.

i also need suggestions on where to stay as i dont prefer staying high on moutains, i would rather prefer crowded cities to stay.

also if some one can suggest the best places to explore switzerland in 5 days

Hi. The swiss pass validity is here: http://www.stc.ch/download/pdf/uebersichtskarte_en.pdf.
It doesn't look like there is anywhere. The one possibility that came to mind was Jungfrau, but you only get a 50% reduction from Wengen/Grindelwald to Kleine Scheidegg so that ruled that out. I am not aware of anywhere else that a train line has a station where you can ski from.

There was also the Col de Bretaye but that is also 50% reduction and trains only run every couple of hours for a half fare of CH 8.90.
Its a pleasant run back down to Villars and probably worth the fare, but whether its worth going all that way I'm not sure. You could probably find somewhere the Swiss themselves ski with a few blue runs which has a reasonably cheap lift pass. Might be worth trying a Swiss French/German or Italian speaking forum or asking on trip advisor where a number of locals can give replies.

Of course with the poor snowfall at present it might not be possible at all.

Villars have very limited snow at the moment as whatever fell as snow this week fell as rain over there. If you want to stay in a city you should probably head to Davos. But you will still need a lift pass. Ski lifts are not generally a part of public transport system so your train pass won't work. If you are a beginner and therefore don't need extensive terrain to ski you should mention this at the ticket office as they may have options at reduced prices.
