Yes, Austria is good for skiing.

I can't recommend any specific resorts for you, hardly ever skied in Austria.
But I go with a non-skiing OH.
What I look for is somewhere high so that I can get to good skiing quickly.
So - no bus journeys, multiple lifts up to the good stuff etc.
This way it is easy for me to get back and meet up. And then clear off for another spell on the white stuff.
I also look for a variety of pedestrian ways up the hill - to a restaurant for lunch etc.
It may be that your girlfriend may be skiing on the nursery slopes and enjoy getting up high for the view and experience even though coming back down in the bubble/cablecar.
The only place I have been in Austria that may work is Saalbach/Hinterglem.

If your girlfriend hasn't skied before she may not like it, surprising as this sounds!
So as well as the other factors you're considering I think it would be a good idea to make sure wherever you pick has something for non skiers to do.
I haven't been to many ski resorts but I did notice when I was in Zell am See that it's a large town with loads of shops, restaurants, spas, and it's even got a museum. However, you do have to go up a gondola to get from the town to the ski area. It's a really pretty place as well as the lake views are quite magnificent :)
I liked the ski-ing there too, although it's not a large area and it's not high (like Old Andy suggested), but you can also get to Kaprun on the free ski bus and there's more ski-ing there up high on the glacier.
Best of luck and I hope your girlfriend becomes as keen on ski-ing as you are and you have a great holiday :)

Schladming might be worth researching. Short transfer from Salzburg and a variety of shops, cafes, etc in the main town. Nursery slopes of Rohrmoos would be easy for you to meet up and fairly good bus links for the 4 main areas. Haven't skied there for a few years though so perhaps there is someone here who has been more recently?
