You'd have to be pretty unlucky for Flaine to have poor snow early April. The last two seasons have panned out like this...

just booked first week of April in Les Carroz - anyone with experience of this resort late in the season ? what's the chance we'll be able to ski back down to the village ?

I have been to this area few times at that time of the year.
You should be able to ski back to the village ( the runs end at the gondola) but it might be a case of skiing down a strip that's been kept open.
The red run (I think it's red, been a while since I went) down can get pretty rocky and bare in places too.
But, don't be put off, it's a great area for early April as you can easily get to Flaine where the snow should still be great.
Lovely area. Have a great time.
It won't be horrendously busy either.

Just had a look and the red is called Timalets that goes to the gondola, but there's a blue too.
Watch out for the restaurant at the top of the gondola, think it's The Molliets, we still refer to it as 'expensive restaurant'.

We had our first ever ski holiday in Les Carroz and absolutely loved it! Great skiing for all levels, huge ski area (Flaine, Samoens, Morillon, Sixt), lovely village with numerous places to eat. We went second week in March and there was ample snow for skiing into the village. S

Been there a few times, including once in the last week of March.
50:50 whether you can ski all the way back to town then, but you can always get the gondola down and the snow should still be good on the majority of the mountain. As said, you can get to Flaine easy enough.
If Spring has arrived, then Les Carroz's a super place to chill out in the sunshine after a session; nice little town, not busy and friendly vibe to the place. If you do get lucky with the snow then there are some great runs down (from the top) into Morillon (often almost deserted compared to Flaine, but loses the snow much earlier) and toward Samoens (likewise, but has a few North facing slopes that keep the snow ok).
Enjoy.
