NOTE: see similar post regarding advice for the 3V. I've repeated below some of the same criteria. Get typing folks!!

Despite posting elsewhere that we are looking to go to somewhere other than France for our 2nd ski hol, we are quite tempted to jump on the ski train (day version) out to Moutiers and then get a quick 30 minute transfer up to the 3V. It's likely to be either that or a local flight to Innsbruck and a resort near there. T

Therefore for the Innsbruck option I would appreciate some advice re. best locations/accommodation.

For various reasons we are highly likely to be heading out the weekend of 8th/9th Feb for a week.

It will just be me + better half (we're abandoning the teenagers!). I'd describe myself as an upper immediate and my wife an intermediate. Using Val d'Isere as a guide I'm pretty good on nearly all pisted runs (although not keen on moguls). My wife confident on greens/blues, generally confident on reds (although she takes it slowly) and is yet to ski a black run. She is improving all the time though and is keen to 'push on'.

We have only ever skied in Norway or France (Hemsedal, Paradiski, Espace Killy) but really keen to try another country.

We're keen on ski in ski out if at all possible and not fans of buses but would be ok with a 5 min walk (especially if we can leave our skis/boots at a ski shop).

Some other criteria:

Looking for somewhere within max 90 minutes transfer from Innsbruck.

We like the buzz of a larger town/village but we're certainly not looking to party into the night.

Decent ski area (maybe at least 150km?)

Relatively snow sure

Accommodation - we would probably choose between catered chalet and hotel option. Not a fan of hotels per se but guess this is the usual option in Austria

We're not looking for the cheapest place to ski so open to all suggestions

Any help would be appreciated.

Why not take the TGV from Paris to Oulx and do the Milky Way. Big area about, 400kms with lots of varied runs and all manicured the "Italian way". Italian prices and great food and Sauze is not the big party town it used to be. With Sestriere, Claviere, Sansicario, Montgenevre and Pragaleto all on the same pass and a days option for Serre Chevalier, L2A and Alpe D'Huez I reckon its a good bet at that time of year. There is lots of accom available but prob not to may chalets.Somewhere near the Clotes area may well be ski in/out if you are lucky (Hotel Hermitage is anyway)
Carving leaves me all on edge

Austria via Innsbruck opens you up to a choice of some of the finest alpine skiing you can get, Barney.
Consider the following:

St Anton/Lech - if price isnt so important I think your wife would love Lech. Some wonderful skiing here, especially just up the road (linked) at Zurs and Stuben, and then St Anton round the corner on a short bus ride if you want to. St Christoph was a good place to stay to access both sides.

Solden - ridiculously high skiing with 3 glaciers and over 150km marked piste. I havent been yet but its gaining a reputation as the up and coming place to go.

Ischgl - tons of red run skiing high up and plenty going on in town as well.

Mayrhofen - an old personal favourite, with a superb town full of shops, eateries and bars, lively of you want it but not in your face, a wide range of skiing all around with the immediate Penken area good for reds. Link over to Eggalm offers some superb cruisy quiet skiing, and theres Hintertux glacier up the valley, well worth at least a day out. You can also take the bus or little train down to Zell where theres a lot to go at.

Italian Dolomites - resorts around the sella ronda such as Arabba and Selva often fly into Innsbruck now as its a shorter easier transfer. Massive amounts of skiing, and somewhere I keep meaning to go to.

Thanks guys.

Need to do some serious research this week.

Tony - what's the usual transfer mode from Innsbruck. Bus or taxi?

Depends where you're going and who you travel with. I've only ever been out of Innsbruck on tour op coaches, never been a problem. I believe trains are good, especially to Mayrhofen anyway, taxis would be expensive unless prebooked from resort maybe and sharing a big VW Transporter maybe? Hire car is an option.

If you go to J2ski top of page Airports/Innsbruck, you should be able to negotiate a way to find "resorts within one and a half hours"

From Innsbruck airport there are buses to the Oetztal, so you can reach Obergurgl, Hochgurgl, Soelden, within one and a half hours.

There is a frequent bus sevice from the airport to Innsbruch Bahnhof. There are trains down the Inn Valley, Zillertal, Alpbachtal, Wildschönau, ~ change at Wörgl for Hopfgarten, (Skiwelt), and Kitzbuhel.
http://www.oebb.at/en/index.jsp is the Austrian train website, but Deutsche Bahn is better, http://www.bahn.com/i/view/DEU/en/index.shtml
