Morning!

Hope everyone had a good Summer..Yippee its snowy holiday planning time again!
This year I'm going to La Tania. Realy keen to get the train for the extra two days on the slopes. Eurostar direct trains are bookable now obviously but I'm quite interested in Eurostar then change in Paris for the sleeper option. Trouble is I'm tight and I'm worried that by the time they are bookable (3 months before travel) I'll get a nasty shock on the price and wish I'd gone for the direct eurostar. Anyone know what the price difference is likely to be if I book the Eurostar-Corail Lunea option as soon as its bookable?
cheers!

Hi Shipjack,
I did this combination last year to Bourg St Maurice. Think it was about £170 for a sleeper birth.
On details and prices AllyG is your man/woman/person/humanoid :) but she is away for a few days.
I did this for 8 days not 6 as it was to be a one trip season last year.
I would do it again - for the 8 not 6 reason. The journey was fine but long, tedious and pretty uncomfortable. Others find the comfort level OK. If I were to do it again I would upgrade. Very disappointed on how old, tired, dirty, knackered the Eurostar was. and how cramped, tiny, uncomfortable the Linea 6 person birth was.
so, for me it would be first class Eurostar and a four birth cabin - then not so tired upon arrival.

Cheers OldAndy,

I did the direct eurostar last year so I reckon even the cheapest eurostar/corail lunea option must be more comfy and sitting bolt upright all night! Saying that, I soon forgot the tiredness/discomfort once the skiing excitement kicked in.

Hi Shipjack,
The combined ticket prices for the Eurostar between London and Paris, and the French sleeper train between Paris and Bourg St Maurice, started at £81 single for the 6 person couchette and rapidly went up to £126 one way. I was watching the prices because I was organizing the group holiday to Tignes.

On another occasion I found I could sleep on the night Eurostar as long as I bought the more expensive tickets because you get much bigger and more comfortable seats with proper head rests. But I couldn't sleep at all in the cheap Eurostar seats.

I also managed to sleep no bother in the very squashy 6 person couchette. They're arranged in triple bunks and there's not enough head room to sit up in them, and you have to climb up a ladder to get into the upper bunks, and there's very little luggage storage room. Plus, the guy in my couchette turned all the lights off so it was a very good thing I didn't need to go to the toilet in the middle of the night (the toilets are down the corridor). If I do it again I think I will bring a torch with me, just in case!

Hi Shipjack,
I have done all travel options over the years, having been in Meribel non stop 26 seasons. Check out the ski meribel sleepr coach. More relaxing, far more comfortable, and much cheaper than the train. It Leaves London Fridays gets to Meribel or La Tania about 10-11am. Leave Saturdays on return at 5pm..so not quite 8 full days but 7.5. ps. I dont get commission !!

Cheers everyone,
I think we are going to give the eurostar/ sleeper combo a go this year. If we book as soon as the tickets go on sale it's going to be a bit cheaper than the direct eurostar anyway (direct prices have gone up already). Looking
as far into the booking horizon as poss at the
moment it's 39 for the eurostar and 49 for the sleeper..so about the same as you said Ally. Got to love 8 days on the slopes !

Hi Shipjack, I hope you enjoy your train journey :)
I would do it again, quite happily :)

Looking at my paperwork, I did the sleeper on the return journey. I got the Altibus down from Tignes to Bourg, had supper there, and then got in the sleeper which actually arrived a lot earlier than the time it said on my ticket, which was 20-05.
I was a bit worried about making sure I got in the right carriage, so I asked the French railway staff for help and in any case they were standing on the platform checking off everyone and their tickets on their list.
I think getting on the train early is a good idea because it means you have a chance to get your luggage in the limited storage space.
I was fairly crafty (I thought) and I had supper and brushed my teeth before I got on the train, and prepared to sleep in my clothes. Everyone seemed to just try and go to sleep as soon as they got on the train.
It got in to Paris Austerlitz at 06-31 on time, and they announced the fact that they were about to arrive about 10 minutes before so that everyone had time to wake up etc.
I was in a mixed carriage/couchette - 4 men and 2 women - but this didn't really bother me, and I slept very well.

I got a taxi from Austerlitz to Paris Nord because I'd read something that said there were a lot of stairs if you tried to go on the underground. I've forgotten how much the taxi charged me, but I know it was pretty cheap.
And then when I got to Paris Nord I had plenty of time to get changed, brush teeth, eat breakfast etc. before the Eurostar left at 08-43. And I arrived back in St Pancras at 10 a.m. I could really have booked the earlier Eurostar, but I thought I'd leave plenty of time in case the sleeper was delayed, or I got stuck in traffic or something going between the 2 stations in Paris.

I went out on the Saturday direct day train but I got my 8 days ski-ing by staying in a hotel in Bourg over Saturday night.

Cool, i was wondering how much time to allow for the transfer in Paris..thought a couple of hours but I am tempted to try and cut it a bit finer as you mention..hmm.
