Sorry to start another thread on a similar topic but wanted to catch the eye of people who know the area (portes de soleil)
For a mixed group of abilities do you think morzine above chatel re skiing choices?
I liked the quantity of choice of runs in morzine but also likd the variety of access from chatel - you can get to Switzerland etc. also I found this side less busy and prettier with tree lined slopes etc. it seems to be a bit cheaper too than Morzine - but would morzine be better for beginners who have had 6 sessions learning on dry slopes in England?
Poised to book in Chatel but dithering ...
Any thoughts appreciated.

I'm a big fan of Chatel, and it's a bit of a myth that it's not good for beginners, it's very good. It's where I first learnt to ski. Everyone has their favourite places and there are a lot of people who only go to Morzine, but Chatel (in my eyes) is much better.

The access to the slopes is much easier than morzine, and there are more places to start your day from. plus it's a good 300m higher than morzine. It's a much more French resort so that's good if you actually want to feel like you are in france and not little britain

Some of my friends have a catered chalet there and they say how surprised their guests are at the quality of Chatel... I'll get in touch with them to get in touch with you with more advice

I spent a week in Chatel earlier this summer and thought it looked pretty decent; although it is quite difficult to assess a ski resort when it is completely grassy and full of hikers and mountain bikers ! And yes,it felt pretty French to me, for a holiday resort.

Went to Châtel in February and really enjoyed it. However (as stated above) it is very spread out and there's an uphill walk of around a mile to the village if you're staying in the valley floor, as we did. There is a free ski bus, but it ends around 7.30pm/8pm.

We were nearer the Linga gondola, which offered easier access to Avoriaz where we spent most of our time. There's an awful lot of terrain in Avoriaz for all levels and you'll cetainly not get bored or run out of pistes.

Morzine is about an hour away from Châtel (less if you're speed merchants), and you'll arrive via the Super Morzine gondola, then have to trek across town to the Pleney. It's easily do-able for a day, but the route back may be a bit hairy for less-advanced skiers, with several flat sections and mainly red pistes and a lot of well-used runs being your only return option. We certainly didn't find an easier route back, and we covered a lot of terrain.
