A lot of our guests fly home from Venice and add a couple of days onto their week to spend some extra time there. It's a lovely way to end your holiday.
There are areas in Italy where you will get in trouble for skiing off-piste, for example anywhere that is above a piste as you could cause an avalanche onto the skiers below. These areas are prety well marked. If it's a high risk day for avalanches you will also get in trouble but it's more common sense than anything else.
There are several designated off-piste areas and the Marmolada glacier has some of the best off piste that I've done, it's a fantastic free ride area.
The Dolomiti Superski pass covers a massive area and if you staying somewhere with access to the Sella Ronda you will have plenty of pistes at your disposal. If you're keen to adventure a bit further and use the bus system you can ski from other valleys which are all a little bit different.
And the food's great! :D

Why would an Italian mountain have less off piste opportunity than anywhere else? The best heliskiing in Europe is all in Italy. Courmayeur has excellent lift accessed offpiste, Toula glacier (could argue equal to anywhere in world).

Yes they want you to be responsible and will prosecute if you are seen not to be. Not unreasonable.

Howzabout Sella Ronda? Google maps showing Venice Marco Polo to Canazei in just under 2.5 hours. Seems reasonable; we did Treviso - Canazei in just over three hours taking the 'scenic route' via Cortina, Arabba and Passo Pordoi. A27 to Belluno then SR203. If you opted to stay in Selva you could probably do the drive in 2 hours.

Fabulous on-piste skiing for intermediates: off-piste can be very steep and involve 5 metre drop-offs. Better off-piste for intermediates to be found in Aosta.

Hi Ranchero
have been told that some areas that just don't allow any off piste. We have two older boys who are mad keen on off piste so to go somewhere where it would be restricting I think would not be the right holiday for us

think Sella Ronda is a good option for us although I conatcted the toursit board in Val Gardena nad they were adamant about no off-piste!
thanks again
