So I am planning a trip around January 12th and plan on looking at late deals at the end of december!
Whats the latest you have left it before booking and did you get a great deal that made the fear of not getting a holiday worth the wait?

Phoned travel agent 10.30 Saturday - arrived in resort 11.30 Sunday.
Price was good too!

Mid Jan is a good time for late deals, agents such as ski solutions and iglu ski may well have a good idea what is starting to become available.

Similar to OA, I had my sister and some friends already booked on a Mark Warner holiday, but it was going to cost me almost £1800 to add on to the trip. I finally got it on the Friday for £249 and was in resort the following morning :)

Not sure I could do that any more, as I doubt work will let me have a week off at 4 hours notice.

The agents I use for our holiday cottages phoned up once and said would I take someone in 2 hours time - and I said 'fine, no problem'.

I usually put the cottages on special offer about 2 weeks before, if I haven't got a booking.

But I don't like going on last minute ski holidays myself, because I like to have it all planned well ahead of time. Sometimes you can get things very cheaply by booking well in advance.

I went to the travel agents at Birmingham Airport many years ago early on a Saturday morning with my bags packed. I was in an Austrian resort early that evening!

These days, however, I tend to plan a bit further in advance!

Booked a chalet in Meribel 4 days before hand, based on forecast.
1st week in Jan. The people who were there at New Year paid over £1000 each and had no snow below 2000m.
It started snowing at 4pm as they came off the slopes on the Friday. It continued to snow until 8am Sunday morning, when the sun came out. We didn't see a cloud for the rest of the week.
3 Valleys was empty and the snow was perfect.
We paid about £200.
