This winter, my main trip is likely to be with someone who is returning to skiing after quite a few years so I'd be interested in suggestions for a resort that is good for mixed abilities, has a reasonable (preferably British-run) ski school, and is convenient for lunchtime meet-ups etc.

I thought about Morzine, but its low altitude makes March a little risky, and I'm not really keen to return to France just yet.

Any thoughts would be most welcome.

I go in a mix group twice a Year to Chatel in the Portes Du Soleil. I know its France but it ticks all the boxes for us (1 hour from the airport being one of many). We are 2 families + the occasional male skier tagging along. Very mixed abilities. There is a British Ski School in Chatel. The snow record is very good and the area links into Avoriaz and Switzerland. We meet up at lunchtime following ski lessons everyday. There are many ski snobs that poo poo Chatel for some reason. I have skied for 30 years including 5 seasons in total in 3 Vallees, Espace Killy and the PDS and this is where I return to. Best I can say really.

The last 2 years we've been to Are Sweden in march and had plenty fresh dumps, mainly blue and red runs, ski school is excellent, not British run but no language barrier, I had an Aussie teacher and a major breakthrough in technique. Plenty decent meeting spots. More of an alpine feel than much of scandi.

As your remit says you want to avoid France, I would suggest ESS at either Verbier or Zermatt. Here's a link to their site. If you contact Julian, you can say I suggested his Ski School :D

I know of several other really good teachers, but they are all in France!

Verbier, good for mixed abilities and convenient for lunchtime meet-ups? Not sure about that.
Amazing place but not he first I'd think of for someone returning to skiing.
Zermatt would be the better of those two I'd suggest.

I know your not keen to return to France but you will struggle to beat Val D'Isere for what you want.

Last time I looked Val D'Isere was in France but thanks any way for suggestions so far. Afraid Verbier doesn't float my boat and Zermatt might prove a bit too expensive.
