Hi,
Looking to use the train for a transfer from Salzburg to Schladming in March, been looking at the OBB website and it will let me buy a Std rail ticket but wont let me book one on a specific train i would like .
Anyone know if you have to reserve a seat in order to get on the train, or if i buy a standard ticket can I just take pot luck with getting a seat or more importantly getting on the train??
any help would be great, as ive not used trains abroad

p.s
I have e-mailed OBB but no reply as of today!
Many Thanks

I have used RailEurope, which covers the whole of Europe, maybe you can find out more from there.
Rather a bad day on the slopes than a good day in the office!

I've travelled by train in Austria a few times. The standard ticket will be valid on any train (well between Salzburg and Schladming in your case). You could just buy one at Salzburg stn when you get there, they price tickets per km not like British co's.

I have travelled by train from Salzburg to Schladming a couple of times but it was over 5 years ago. It was cheap as chips and very puntual and comfortable. Sure there are 2 trains an hour but on one you have to change once about half way. It was just over an hour trip if I rember correctly. If you are flying into Salzburg then there is a tram from the airport which goes to the station again relatively cheap and about 15 minute ride. Its a very scenic trip which passes under a cliff top castle which was in a Bond Movie.

8) The train ticket will be easily purchased in Salzburg. If there is more than 1 person and no more than 5 you can get a €28 Einfach Raus ticket, this is a return ticket if used on the same day , but even if you only use it one way for up to 5 people it is still good value. You do not need to book a ticket it is most unlikely that it would be full. If you go back to the obb web site there is a number you can call from Austria it is 051717 you caould try this with 0043 in front .You can not use the Einfach Raus ticket if there is only 1 person - silly I know hope this helps

the castle you would pass is the Hohenwerfen. It might also have been in a Bond movie but it is most famous for being the setting for "Where Eagles Dare" starring Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood. We visited last summer and the views are fantastic! Hope you enjoy Schladming - it's a great resort and with all the World Cup money pouring in, the facilities are amazing.
