Hi,

I would be grateful if someone or everyone could help me on this.

We are going to Albiez Montrond for a weeks Skiing/Snowboarding on the 17th March 2012.

I will be hiring a car but before hand I need people to help me on what type of Vehicle to get and what are the ruling on Snow Tyres & Chains on Car wheels.

What are the road conditions going to be like in March, do you have to have to get a car with Chains on the wheels or will the roads to Albiez Montrond going to clear.

There will be 4 of us in the car with Luggage but no Skis or Snowboards to bring along as we pick this up in Albiez Montrond.

Also, are there Tolls on the road from the Airport to Albiez Montrond, if so, does anyone know the prices.

I would be grateful on any information on Car hire and Travelling to Albiez Montrond.

Yours Gratefully
A Newbe Skier

About 180K's on some toll roads, Main roads will be clear and you possible will need chains depending on conditions for the last part of the journey.
If there are splitting the cost then possible some type of MPV so you have planty of room for your luggage.
For car hire I normally use this lot, competitive on price and always had a good service from them over the years.

I always use the price comparison websites for the best deal.
I'd also recommend what Ian said about going for something like an MPV as a normal car will be too small, an estate may be ok to be honest, but an MPV will give you a lot of extra space and comfort.

They'll probably all have winter tyres fitted as a matter of course so dont pay for an upgrade when you book.

Buy chains from a supermarket en route and keep them for yourself. You may not need them but its best to have them in case the weather turns ugly.

Unfortunately you can't guarantee winter tyres on hire cars. I've had a hire car from Lyon that came with winter tyres, and a hire car from Chambery that came without, so it is definitely worth checking.

Lots of people seem to take the risk, and not bother with snow chains, but my advice would be to take them. (And book in advance eg. with Avis they are 33€ prebooked and 45€ if not)

You would be unlucky if you had to drive up the mountain on white roads. But if it is white, the gendarmes will be out in force. If you don't have winter tyres they will make you put snow chains on, and if you don't have chains, they won't let you up the mountain.

Albiez is a fab resort for beginners. Enjoy!

Now, now Wickers; you know the rules about blatantly touting for business in the forum...

Chillymonster... I'm pretty sure viamichelin's route finder will give you a good idea (if not the exact amount) of tolls payable for your route but it's not going to be huge, and French autoroutes are generally excellent so almost always worth the cost.

Cheers admin,

Just looked up viamichelin's route finder.
Got all the details and a road map planner for driving.

Thanks a lot
