When my sons were 12-13 years old I wanted them to learn how to survive outdoors in the winter so I planned a 5 day outing on skis on a major mountain range!
A hut to hut "haute route" experience with a twist ! Sleeping outdoors !

On first night we prepared our shelter,,,at three sided lean to log shelter! It had room for 10 persons. I began to show my sons how to think for all "events" while we slept!

The others,,,well they were so excited to be in the "wild" that they forgot this !

First rule in survival ! Keep all socks, underwear, sweaters, boots IN the sleeping bag while sleeping outdoors !

In the morning we had 2 cm. of snow on top of our sleeping bags due to strong wind! The others had snow covered boots that were like ice sculptures!

All nordic people have discovered that warm feet means survival !
All experienced skiers know that happy skiing means "happy feet" !

Before you go to bed,,yes kiss your wife/girlfriend etc,,, but more importantly make sure your boots are warming up !

Like it. First thing I do when I get in is put the old warmers in my boots. I do get damp feet during the day (not sure if snow or sweat) so the warmers/dryers are very important for me! :D

Ian,
An ski inn I visit often has a wall full of vertical PCV pipes (for ski boots ) a computer fan feeds warm from furnace air to pipes!
VoilĂ  simple effective!

No need for expensive systems as Trencher shows !

I'm glad this topic has been raised. I recently bought my first pair of "own" ski boots and had a pair of Zipfit liners moulded for my feet. I was advised by the boot fitter not to put my boots on those warming racks you find in resorts as they could risk distorting the moulded liners. Has anyone ever come across this problem ?

I have Zipfit liners and I keep my boots with liners in them in a boot locker by the lift station, There are no pipes or anything just a metal box, but there is some system for heating/ventilating as boots are warm and dry next morning. I didn't notice any effects on the fit of the boot and the bootfitter didn't give me any warnings but I may ask him.
