Thinking of going skiing on my own for a week. Turning 40 and the wife has no hols left to take and no friends ski. Any suggestions for a cheap week somewhere as supplements make very expensive? From Edinburgh if possible but not essential. Been to Bulgaria lots and loved it but any suggestions welcome or possibly open to teaming up with someone for the week?

If I was you I would look on websites offering chalet deals and try book into a chalet that have a few places left. You should get a decent deal, some chalets offer single rooms with no supplements and you will meet new people there who you can possibly ski with.

As for places to go that really depends on what you want from the holiday. A resort like morzine could be a great option, plenty to do, good ski area, short transfer from Genova etc.

I have been on a solo ski holiday twice now - and loved it!! I could make my own decisions, have a hot chocolate when I wanted, a long lunch if needed, pack up when I wanted, ski the same run all day if I wanted to practise something specific - and had a fab time, and also no waiting around for people to arrive/meet up for breaks! I even swapped cameras with people so I got some shots of me and me of them. That said it does help if you are a sociable type, I did chat to loads of different people. Someone did kindly post in one my threads a website address for solo skiers - I had a look and it seems a good option. Skiing is a very sociable activity but a chalet option would be a good bet as you will no doubt find someone to ski with, and then socialise later! Do it!!
Rather a bad day on the slopes than a good day in the office!

Do what I did...Get a group together using one of the skiing forums...the one I used began in N. WE...all 18 single souls who are either married (OH hates skiing or no hols), singles....(sad with no one to ski with) and a few others are off to Serre Che on the 4th Feb. Its dead easy...you decide the venue , pair them up...they pay for themselves...meet at Gatwick...Job done.

I have space at Mondi Holiday Resort in Oberstaufen Germany for week 10 March to 17 March if you are interested. Skiing at Steibis with shuttle bus. Let me know if you are keen. I have a 6 sleeper and going alone so far.

The tour operators normally charge very high single supplements. They operate on the basis of "sweating" the assets to the maximum extent. If you are travelling off-peak, I think most Austrian hotels and pensions charge by the person and only apply a modest supplement for a single.

If you can get into a chalet at a modest cost, it might be better in terms of meeting a few people. YOu might also consider the Ski Club of GB. AFAIK, they organise ski guiding in lots of resorts - another good way of finding a few ski buddies once you get there

.... but you may need to find some new mates. Its essential to have plenty of skiing friends. Otherwise you start to feel furtive when you plan a trip, log on here, etc
