Planning to swing by Laax in January (despite the advice from one poster on here that I'd be better suited to Lenzerheide!)
Little bit wary, though, of the description in one guidebook/website about the hotel billed as good for lads on a weekend away and gives its guests earplugs when they check in! |

Thanks, remarks about Laax and Lenzerheide noted, but I'm still planning three days in Laax as the centrepiece of the trip.
I know Arosa very well and have no intention of taking on the road; my first class rail return railway ticket from Chur is already booked! (As is my room in the extraordinary Hotel Eden) |

Switzerland is by far the best country for a DIY or short-break holiday as you describe. Go to a resort website, most of which have accommodation bookers - and most hoteliers will accept bookings for three or four days (not very usual elsewhere in the alps).
Travel onto resort is so easy to arrange by train or post bus (www.sbb.ch). Resort choice is quite wide, but if you include Zurich as one of your aiport options, you open up central Switzerland (Engelberg - easy to get to and perfect for three or four days) and the many excellent resorts in the Graubunden (Davos, Klosters, Laax, Arosa etc). I find it such good fun arranging these DIY trips and so much more satisfying than a pre-arranged package when it all works out! Good luck... |

I did that yesterday after a day and night on beer, Southern Comfort and mojitos at the rugby in Biarritz. Never again!
This morning I spent travelling home via SNCF, Eurostar and First Great Western!. Can't tell you what Eurostar was like - fast asleep all the way to St Pancras! |

Who is Mr O'Neill? I thought it was Stelios and O'Leary - the offspring of Freddie Laker - who changed air travel for ever!

I don't think the Ryanair experience is all that great but I would not cut my nose off to spite my face by saying I'll NEVER (an awfully long time!) fly with them.
They're not always cheaper but they do fly to destinations that others don't. I can think of Biarritz, Santander, Treviso and Perpignan as places I've been with Ryanair that were not served by other airlines. I've been with EasyJet, BMI Baby, Go (gone!) and Buzz (buzzed off!) as well as FlyBe; if they're going to the place I want to got to at the right price, I'll fly with them. Now Aeroflot....don't get me started on Aeroflot ) |

Probably the best company I've been with in 35 years-plus! If you like Mark Warner stick with em. If you want equivalent quality I think you'll have to pay top dollar for a company like Powder Byrne etc.
