We've done both. Last year we drove to St. Gervais for Christmas & New Year & found it to be a hassle free journey - althogh heavy snow did close in behind us & had we gone a day later it could have been a different story. We planned the route using the following route planner:-
www.viamichelin.co.uk This gave us exact locations & prices of the tolls so we had the right euros ready at each booth & had no problems. Coming home we found the service areas to be very busy but out biggest hold up was checking into the ferry port at Calais. We were there in plenty of time but missed our ferry which was annoying. The toll roads are great & we're doing it again this year. Good luck. |

Hi mancub You might also find useful information here:- http://www.chamonet.com/lifts/ski-pass-options.html If you're in St.Gervais for 3 months, you might want to go further than the Evasion area. We're out in St. G. from the 22nd, so please make sure there's plenty of snow  |

Have you found this link - lots of photos of Chatel here? http://www.btinternet.com/~firststop/pictures/index_ncmain.htm I've just found in my 'Ski 06' folder :) |

Sorry I don't have any tips. We stay in St. Gervais so have only gone to Les Contamines to ski. We always take a packed lunch with us, so apart from the odd vin chaud or hot chocolate, we don't eat at the mountain restaurants - they aren't cheap! The village looks nice as you drive through. If you plan to eat out on New Year's eve, I suggest you book something as soon as you get there as everywhere is bound to be busy. You'll be able to get lots of information from the tourist office once you are there.
Have a lovely time - & keep doing the snow dance! |

Resort Rides were recommended to me by 'Eggman' - who posts on here when he's not too busy golfing . Mention his name & you'll probably get red carpet treatment  !

Hi Pinkwindsor
I don't know if you'll find a deal on ski passes with lessons, but I think it's unlikely. You can sometimes get deals with some of the big tour operators to certain resorts when you book a package which includes equipment hire, lessons & passes. This photo was taken in Les Contamines on 1st January this year from the top of the red run Aiguille at 2487m. Well worth getting up early to enjoy the empty slopes.
We've used Resort Rides before when travelling just down the road to St.Gervais, & found them to be excellent. Last year we drove, which made it possible to ski in all the areas covered by the Evasion pass, but if you're staying in Les Contamines you can just buy the Contamines-Monjoie/Hauteluce pass which is slightly cheaper. Last December, when conditions in St.Gervais got a bit too warm, we found much better snow in Les Contamines. I'm sure you'll have a fantastic time. We'll be out there for Christmas & new year too, so it had better start snowing immediately!! |

You're right OldAndy, it's horrific! I must admit, we didn't enjoy it in January 2006. The conditions were just too good & there were far too many options with the PDS pass. Every day we had the chore of deciding whether to stay in France, or head over the border into Switzerland. Sometimes, we even had to share the slopes with one or two other people. Our noses got sunburnt, on a couple of occasions it snowed and we had to watch a major snowboarding competion in Avoriaz. Don't think we'll bother going back!

Hi Mattski - sounds great. I've just asked my OH if he'd be interested. He is, but he says he's got too much work on. We must live near you so it would have been handy........I wonder if he'll let me go? :?
