New skier, hope to go this winter!

Lots of good advice here. Personally, I reccomend Alpe d'Huez, but then I live here...
The only other thing I would add is that you should probably go on a chalet holiday.
Self catering is the cheaper option, but you will benefit enormously from being in the company of other skiers.
Their tips and advice (some of which might be both accurate and useful) will answer many questions.
Good luck, you're about to start the best sport in the world.

Perhaps most importantly, this includes several runs back to base so no tricky, over-crowded resort runs that you tend to encounter in most other resorts. :D

While a few people have mentioned Courcheval, I would have two reservations. Firstly, it tends to be very busy - not something that timid skiers like. Secondly, it is extremely poor value for skiers who will only sample a tiny portion of the resort. In my view, they are better off looking at smaller resorts which will suit their skiing ability and cost them a lot less

ADH gets my vote too. Even in the satellite villages, like Oz en Oisans, you can always get back by lift, so you can travel around the resort and not just be stuck in one place.
Thay way, should you choose to, you can experience the resort without actually having to ski what my better half used to call "a cliff of death".
Does anyone know what Echaillon means?

Its an old word for a ladder or steps etc. with its roots in latin.

Skiing at the end of the Season

Despite everyone saying that last year was terrible, even in high resorts, we could ski all the way back down to Oz en Oisans (part of Alpe d'Huez) until the last day of the season in late April.
Even in bad years big resorts have well preserved sectors so its worth getting local knowlege and last minute infomation.
Mind you, I've skiied in a metre of fresh stuff in late April at 1000m, though not often.
