You are lucky, I can fit skis in without kicking out the front passenger  |

Personally, I would carry the skis inside the car and strap one of the passengers to the roof
Seriously, the most important thing is to protect the skis from the crap which will be thrown at them. A hard ski case is great and can be securely strapped to the roof without any issues. But also consider security, it is not nice to stop for a rest break, and a simple 5 minutes later you return to find that your prized possessions are no longer attached to your roof :( |

Oh, yes I want that Jet Stream to stick down south permanently
Back to the question, France is a strange one. You have to carry a breathalyser and reflective jackets and all the other stuff, but chains are not compulsory to carry. But the law then states that if the local signs or gendarmes decide so, then it is compulsory to have them fitted  So, I guess they should really be carried as a matter of course if heading to the mountains. @Brooksy, yep from the Per Luigi range. A nice tyre with plenty of lace grip  |

Hi Pezwit. The only accurate answer to the question, is it depends on what the weather does when you are going there. If signs or gendarmes dictate that chains must be fitted, then you will have to use them. FYI, my brother has taken a discovery to Val Thorens before and been required to fit chains, and actually did need to have them fitted. He also had decent m&s tyres fitted, so it was not a case of needing the chains due to incorrect tyres. If you need them, it is going to be much cheaper to have them with you for the trip than to have to try and find some out there. You can rent easily enough in the UK, but frankly, if you are likely to make more than one trip, you may as well buy a set. You never know when they will be usefull, even in the UK. Especially if the Jet Stream decides to stay south for the winter. |

I am guessing that those that do run schools like this have a tendency to turn out exceptional skiers who go on to represent their countries. It is interesting, but there is something very similar to what you describe in Tignes La Lac, but it is run by a hotel specialising in looking after families with children. They utilise a single short run and have their "nanny" staff spread out to assist all the children as required. There are also some excellent animal related gates etc. for the children to ski through/round. All of the children seem to really enjoy it, and the parents can simply go off and enjoy their skiing knowing their children are being well looked after and taught. It would be brilliant of more resorts could get hotels etc. to pool resources and have camps like this pretty much wherever you went. |

Perhaps all classes of "young" skiers should have two instructors. One male and one female. This would allow either emergency to be dealt with appropriately and the class should never be left alone.
An alternate may be to have someone of each sex in a position on the mountain to be able to quickly reach a class, and have them called by radio should the need arise. Sort of like a "Pee Patrol" |

Brooksy, did you not know that Wickers was at the dome with Jesus and Tony Blair. They were discussing how to get people across the river for the Olympics, and Jesus suggested they should walk across, and promptly walked out half way and back to demonstrate.
Tony Blair was astounded, but did not believe it was possible for others to do it, and only Jesus could walk on water. So Wickers did the same to demonstrate it really was possible. On seeing this Tony Blair thought it must be possible and rushed out into the Thames and promptly sank and drowned. "Oh dear!" said Jesus, turning to Wickers. "Do you think we should have told him about the stepping stones?" "What stepping stones?" replied Wickers! And that is why they built the Gondola for everyone else  |

Does anyone know if a Sat-Nav company is sponsoring the Olympics? If there is one, the torch is not a good advert for them is it! The quickest way to get it to the games would have been from London City Airport and up the A12. It should have taken 30 minutes
