what to wear spring skiing
Started by User in Ski Chatter, 16 Replies
Be aware that skiing with exposed flesh can really hurt in spring conditions... the ice particles can give severe friction burns ...like gravel rash for bikers, its lovely to ski in a tshirt ...but dont fall over!!

Blimey I sound so sensible!! But my friend fell not wearing gloves and it really hurt..

What I have been doing is wearing a tshirt under a jacket, but keeping a neck warmer in my pocket, and a small woolly hat in the other, and glove liners instead of gloves ..the hat and neck thing really make a difference if the wind gets up.

I have really enjoyed spring skiing this year after reading pavelski's posts which gave me an insight into doing it with minimum effort..ie. smash the slush moguls bang through them..

Thats uncanny Pavelski that you mention this ...
I was skiing today and was noticing exactly the things you describe.. the flat edges of the piste and the slushy bumps in the middle (ideal for bouncing off and turning while your weight is off your skis!)
Also higher up, the black runs are deserted after lunch and in much better condition but also easier to ski the "wear pattern" is much more uniform.
I am really quite enjoying the spring and its becoming easier to ski as I adapt the techniques you have outlined in other spring skiing posts.
Thankyou for your insights

OldAndy wrote:His fault Smartski - plain and simple.

In all conditions, no matter what the lower skier does - uphill skiers gives way.

However daft, unpredictable, plain crazy is the "route" of the lower skier - uphill gives way and avoids.

end of ........

I have to say I am in complete agreement with this ...however there are exceptions notably when a boarder on his back edge jumps onto the piste (off the lip) with his back to you i.e. not looking uphill ..What can you do? very nasty incident here last year involving this action
P.S. This is not a dig at boarders in any way could be a skier but the stance on a board makes you more "uphill blind"

As bandit says the runs to and from Morzine are nice and gentle and wide ..should be no problem for you ...There is an Irish type bar in Morzine called Dixies that always celebrates Paddies night with live music etc.
This was last years report
