When are you off

I came back from St Anton in January and 'wanted to go again' - so I am - leaving home at 2.30 in the morning for a 6.30 flight to Turin and on to Sauze d'Oulx. Just time to get my had down for a few hours. Bit worried about the lack of new snow and freeze/thaw conditions, but snow depths seem ok, although probably icy.

Leaving home makes no difference. Without my son (34) I would never have started skiing. As a retirement 'present' he and 14 of his thirtysomething mates invited me on a catered chalet trip to La Plagne, and I have joined them for two further trips since. Still spending my pension lump sum and just the two of us are off for a second trip this season. If dad pays the 'kiddies' will follow.

Thanks Tony/Pablo - very comprehensive and useful advice. Next week will be my last hire before buying my first set of skis for next season, so I aim to try out a variety of widths and lengths from the hire shop.

Hi Eljay - hope you don't mind me joining your thread - I am also looking to buy skis for next season. I am going for my fourth ever ski trip on 22nd and will be hiring skis for, probably, the last time, so would like an idea of the sort of skis I should be buying so that I can maybe hire/test next week. I am of a similar standard to Eljay, but 61, 5' 9" and 80 kgs. Aitch

Anybody stayed there - I have a late booking for 22 March - the description says half board, en suite, gym, indoor pool - which sounds good and as I have paid only £580 including lift pass and ski and boot hire, anything above 'cheap and nasty' is a bonus.

I am heading for Montgenevre at the end of the month - can somebody advise on ski pass requirements - I am lower intermediate level - is it worth buying for the local area and adding the extended area for a few days, or just go for the wide area pass for the week.
