How good (or bad) an alternative are Ribcap beanies or do they give a false sense of security ?

Trencher/Bandit

Many thanks - very useful - I am still a relatively new skier and have totally relied on the hire shop to provide me with skis which they consider match my ability.

I can't say that I had actually looked for or noticed any dimensions or markings other than the length.

From this and earlier posts I am beginning to get a better understanding of what I need and what to look out for on the hired kit so that I have a better feel they are the correct skis for me before I leave the shop.

Mike, you say that the first skis did not want to turn. I would guess that they had a much larger sidecut radius than your previous skis. Going from a 13M to a Twenty meter would need a huge difference in skiing style and ability. Combine this with an increase in stiffness, and you have quite a leap. I would make a note of the side cut radius, and length of each ski you use. Move up in small increments if you want to go straighter/ longer, or stay on a smaller radius, and just get a stiffer ski, as you improve.

There is so much brilliant advice on determining the best type of ski for the differing levels of ability that it is difficult to understand it and take it all in.

How do I know the 'sidecut radius' of a pair of skis - I guess it is marked somewhere on the skis, but don't recall seeing it.

Hi Marc

I stayed at the Hotel Splendid last March.

200 yards flat walk to slopes but half a mile up a steep hill (known locally as coronary hill) away from the village and pubs.

Perfectly adequate and I didn't consider expensive.

Well said Dave

Although there are over 38,000 members, I would guess that 95% of the postings are made by less than 1% of the membership which, as a newbie, does make this feel more like a 'private' club than an open forum.

And I agree there has been an increase in sarcastic responses to newbies that has often made me cringe, and public 'mocking' does not encourage new posters.

I am not sure how we encourage a wider participation, other than repeat previous early-season requests to ask newbies to introduce themselves - ages; how many weeks skiing they have had; where have they been; where are they going this year and when; with a group; do they have any basic queries that experienced members can help with; and encourage a post trip report.

Base Layers

What material should I be looking for then? I have some 'thermal underwear' from M & S already, and if I can see myself OK with some more of those, then I would get away with it far cheaper than having to buy some of the 'base layers' marketed by some of the 'outdoor' people. Some of them seem to be at a loss to know how high to take the price, for something that nobody except myself (and my good lady) will see.

I had my first ski trip 3 years ago (at your age) and kitted up with cotton thermals - I hadn't found this site to know that alternative material 'base layers' existed.

In four trips I have only worn leggings twice (reported wind chill -25C), and have never found cotton T-shirt/thermals under a thin fleece uncomfortably sweaty.

A horse called Wickham

I couldn't resist having a £1 each way on a horse called Wickham Street running in the 2.50 at Fairyhouse.

Did it -

a) win by a distance

b) run like a 3-legged donkey

c) refuse to start because 'I only run in France !'
How do you define skill level?

I reckon most of us can relate to the Snow and Rock table - for me

Week 1 - 1 to 3

Week 2 - 4 to 5

Week 3 - 5 to 6

Week 4 - 6
