And another vote for Belle Plagne - we stayed in Le Soleil, about a mile from Plagne Centre - skied over to Belle Plagne via Bellecott - will stay there when I go back. It was my first ever week of skiing and there were plenty of runs within my capability across much of the La Plagne area. We went in the first week of March 2007 - snow conditions were perfect and temperatures were comfortable.

I'm sick of the "blue runs" in Austria...............where to go for some gentle stuff in France?

La Plagne was my first ever ski trip and there were plenty of gentle, wide blue runs that the ski school instructor took us on from day 3 onwards. There is just one short (appx 1km) training green in the middle of the main resort. Second trip was to Meribel, which I would suggest does not meet your requirements, quite steep blues, but we went over the mountain to Courcheval which I think would suit, but has an expensive tag. Transfers to both around 3 hours.

With an early membership of just 5 I thought the OGC had fallen without forming a quorum. I didn't suggest it should be a MOGC (Miserable OGC). Why should we be miserable. Retired, pension, a bit of exhorbitantly paid consultancy to pay for the skiing - the down side is skiing is over for this year. The up side, summer is coming, I have tickets for The Open, The Ashes, 20/20 World Cup and Royal Ascot and in my spare time its over the downs with the bike or walking the dog, and I might have to squeeze in a few rounds of golf for exercise. And I haven't thought about summer holiday yet. OGC member maybe but not MOGC. B****y tough this retirement. (I suppose being a Brighton supporter is a bit of a bummer !!)

Often it does seem a pity that Noah and his party did not miss the boat.

In an earlier thread Mr Double Ya suggested we should set up on Old Git's Club for 'senior' members to contribute.
Not for youngsters fit enough to pull or tear muscles, but for those who only gently strain them, or maybe are still skiing with arthritis, or following knee or hip replacements, or heart attacks or strokes etc. How are you managing ? Not for those who worry about Beige ski jackets on e-Bay or new style skis with go faster stripes, but for those whose skis 'are as good as they were twenty years ago so why buy new ones? Who is still wearing/using the oldest skis/boots/salopettes/ski jacket/gloves/hat/goggles etc Not for the heated chairlifts and windscreen brigade, but for those who were 'towed up the slopes on a rope by a pit pony on holiday'. What was skiing like 'in the those early days ?' My personal ambition is to get a free lift pass at 75. I have 14 years to go but do any members receive one or know of anybody receiving a freebie ? |

An Old Git's Club sounds good - exclude anybody young enough to pull or tear muscles - only those getting gentle 'strains' - where do you want to set minimum age 55 - or do you want special exemption ? I'll start a thread. |

I have just returned from Sauze d'Oulx and used the chairlift from the top of Sauze to the Gondola station to Sestriere and it occurred to me that the 'lift' is probably unique in that -
a) it is a single seater lift b) it is used in both directions Are there any other 'quaint' or favourite lifts around |

Being an 'old git' new skier my knee problem was/is degenerative arthritis (old age) and last November I could hardly walk or bend my right knee. I followed a course of muscle strengthening exercises and went on an already booked week to St Anton in January. I feared the worst and expected this to be my last ever trip. My thighs ached, my calves ached, my back ached, my shoulders ached, but not a twinge from the knee. So I cracked in another 'last trip', to Sauze d'Oulx last week. Again no knee pain. So this week I am going to the doc to see if he will prescribe me a monthly ski trip on the NHS as a cure for my arthritis - reckon I'll get away with it ?? |
