Hi Steve

After 4 trips of boot hiring I decided to buy my own.

I never had particular problems with the hired boots - didn't have to return any because they were uncomfortable - but often felt I had to 'overtighten' them because they felt loose.

I visited a pukka bootfitter/supplier and had custom footbeds moulded - bought Nordica Speed Machine 8s.

Gave them their first test run out at Hemel on Saturday - what a difference - after a few tweaks to the clips they were soooo comfy and there there was no foot movement or toe clenching as here had been with the hired boots.

As for buying skis - I am still progressing from lessons and I think if I had bought skis after one week skiing I would be looking to upgrade by now.

I would say hire for a couple more trips, then consider buying.

Thanks for all the advice - especially Dave Mac for the costings - I reckon its a January trip to Europe and a late booking to US or Canada in March

I went to Plagne Soleil two years ago but don't recall the Sun Valley apartments.

Cracking ski area - probably ski in/out - not much in Soleil in the way of night life, nor Plagne Centre which is a 5 minute free shuttle bus ride away - more night life in Bellecott, which is a 15/20 minute free bus ride.

We crammed 5 into a 1-bed apartment, and I guess you are likely to have a 2-bed apartment, possibly with bunks, for 10.

Hope you know each other well - if not you will by the end of the week.

Stand in and flex them, it's not worth sitting watching the telly in them.

Thanks Bandit - I am now standing in them (and flexing) watching the telly !

After 4 ski trips I finally decided to invest in a pair of boots with custom footbeds and I am off to Hemel at the weekend for a first test run.

Should I have been wearing them in around the house or is that now too late ?
