My son started as a skier at about 12 years old, but tried snowboarding (with a taster lesson) at about 15. He just could not get the hang of it at all despite being a good skier/skateboarder/inline skater and this really frustrated him. He spent most of the time on his backside. He didn't give up however and when he was about 16/17 everything suddenly fell into place and he went down a black run, with the rest of us cheering him down!!
He is now 30, has never gone back to skis and I love watching him boarding as he has real style - he is also the only boarder I will willingly get on a chairlift with!! He wears a helmet, back protector, etc. The pros, I think he would say, are that he seems to manage better in tricky conditions than us skiers. The cons are those awful flat/uphill spots on some pistes where we skiers can pole along. Give it a go - but be prepared for frustration/bruises/sitting on your backside quite a lot!! (This could equally apply to skiing too) |

Thank you for all the advice. Having looked at all sorts of devices and read the reviews, I have finally made an inexpensive purchase to try them out. Something that came out of reading the reviews, was the problem of grips falling off if you have small feet - which I have. So, for about £5 I have bought a pair of Blackspur Overshoe Snow and Ice Grippers size 2-6, which seem quite robust and fit tightly over my ski boots - without me even breaking into a sweat, let along breaking a nail!! They will be tested out in Lech in 4 weeks' time

Another vote for Alpe d'Huez (having skied there 4 times over the years) We once went as a party of 12 for New Year, with an age range of 10 to 65 and everyone had a great time. Those of us who didn't party too hard on NY Eve virtually had the slopes to ourselves on NY Day! I might add that my own children who were late teens at the time, didn't actually make it out onto the slopes at all that day! I think there is a torchlit descent by the ski instructors followed by an excellent firework display.

No you are definitely not alone!! I have seen reviews by people on the same ski trip as ourselves, but who have clearly viewed the experience totally differently (and in a very negative way).
