Dave, On Wednesday, I'm guessing that you will be with the Aufhofers at 4.30pm in the Shirmbar, just below the Gondola. I am likely to be 10 min later than that, so will try and contact you on Jan's mobile, see if you want to meet up in the evening. But I hope you have good skiing, the conditions are looking very good. |

Interesting one this, and one that really goes beyond short break.
For every trip, I have a cost speadsheet, (else, how would you know how many Euros to get) The spreadsheet has a data cell ~ "No of nights". Hence you can change the duration and see the effect. Like a few others on this site, I have a regular base that I go back to. There are good cost benefits to this. 1. Generally, a season pass costs about the same as two weeks skiing. 2. You cost a place to stay that suits your life style needs. This could be an apartment, a hotel, B&B, a large cupboard. (Did 4 weeks in a cupboard one season) You learn the lowest cost. 3. You also learn the lowest cost ways to eat, drink and travel. 4. Once you have set up some local relationships, you can leave skis and kit there. Hence you avoid ski transfer/hire costs. My cost splits are: Flight, Transfer, Accomodation, Day cost, evening cost, lift pass. So many people are attracted by a "deal", and then discover to their horror, that the day and evening costs are treble what they imagined, and in many cases dwarf the "deal" charge. There are a good few ways to reduce costs, and Whickers mentined a couple of them. Local knowledge is a big factor. |

Die Gulaschsuppe. (feminine )
This is a Dave Mac lunch daily, is worth a full meal, and is best value for calorie replenishment. Takes about 8 minutes out of the skiing, and you can catch up all those that skip lunch quite easily. Generally 3.5Euros in the lowest cost valley place, and 5.0 Euros on the mountain. Not to be confused with: ~ "Ich mache aus dir Gulasch" ~ ("I'll beat the living daylights out of you") |

T'wern't me any old road. Haven't pm'd Tony since I sent travel instructions on getting to Niederau.
Are you sure that you are not getting a persecution complex, Tony? 8) I don't recall anyone saying N. was a Mecca. That seems to be a prefab. The people who can see past the lift pass, and really look, find an interesting, friendly place. The skiing is good, and fast, challenging in places. That suits a lot of people, but not everyone. I am sorry that it didn't suit your needs Karen. Reading your posts, it seems to me that the runs in Niederau were too steep for the stage that some of your party is at. If I did read that correctly, then I wonder if you might check out Filzmoos. But I hope that you return some day. It is also a great place to visit in summer. |
