Austrian Toll/Vignette

Good piece of info, thanks, Daved. It's no big deal to pull off the autobahn and buy the vignette, takes 10 minutes max.

I do check how far I can legally go on the Autobahn without the vignette, when travelling from Munich. It used to be Kufstein Sud, but is now a stop further north. I then travel by backroads to Worgl. Once in the Alps, I don't need a vignette, driving from Niederau through the Skiwelt, Kitzbuhel, St Johann, etc for days out.

I have a Salzburg superskicard season pass for this winter, since I have three trips planned, with a probable fourth trip to be arranged, so the vignette is likely to loom.
Policemans heel

I had the injection, very painful, and benefit lasted for only two days.

My doctor sent me to a foot specialist, who carried out measurements, and organised a specific heel insole for me. All carried out on the NHS. It transformed my life, in that I could walk normal reasonable distances every day.

I later bought a near enough size heel innersole from boots, not quite as good, but allow pain free walking.

My son, who became a Scottish volleyball champion, for some reason, went privately, and the innersoles cost £250.

Its that time of the year again

This winter will be 48 years since my first season in Niederau, and I will be back twice this coming season. Plus a visit to Zell am See, plus one other visit to be decided where. But since my season pass covers Zilliertal, across ski juwel, Kitz Allstar and Salzburgerland, no guesses for the area where I will be steering my ski buddies to!

It is right that the village is changing, there is a lot of Dutch spending and development. However, the Brunner bar has re-emerged, and all the old bars are still there.

Yes La Thuile is a pretty good shout. You are quickly on to the gondela, with some good skiing. Also a good route over to La Rosiere in France.

We took our lads to La Thuile when they were 9/10 years old. The local pizza shop wouldn't serve them ~ unless they asked in Italian! After three days, they were confidently asking in Italian, very kid friendly place.

Ski Hire

I keep 6 pairs of skis in a cellar in Austria, and 6 pairs here in Scotland. When I hire, I normally go through J2Ski/Skiset. Always choose the lowest cost for me, and the highest cost for Frau Mac. (That's how the world works).
Since I have skied all length skis from 165 to 215, and all different stiffness and shapes of skis, I no longer think too much about what I get.
I did try the top of range one time. They were really stiff racer skis. I changed a couple of times, found a comfortable pair, only to find out that they were bottom of the range.

After skiing for 50 years, I accept that I have the capability to ski on just about anything, and enjoy it. I still ski at 60/70mph on any of the skis I am given.

Of course, I accept that this will not work for everyone.
Best place for insurance?

I have used MPI for several years. Michael Pettifer is a skier himself, and understands the nuances.

Taking off piste as an example, many companies insist that you are accompanied by a guide or a local ski instructor. MPI take a the view that you simply have to act responsibly.

Given that I have 50 years skiing experience, I might not have too difficult an issue with that one!

Sneaky late trip - snow galore!

Good one Lota. I love end of season skiing.

It fits well with me to ski until mid afternoon, then sit for a couple of hours and paint the alps. A drink, then a late run down.

Your logistics were pretty good. I have a similar end of season EJ flight from Munich to Edinburgh that allows me to ski until mid afternoon.

Great time of year to catch up with friends.
