Although all hope is not lost if I can convince my mate to speed our traveling up a bit so that we hit Ecuador a week or so early and I can then change my flights giving me a few days to get to Portillo or another resort near Santiago.

Just looking at these snowy mountains is killing me...... :(

Brimster,
Normally, you only get one chance at these things. So forget your mate. Meet in NZ.

I had a bit of a laugh with Pablo about our different experiences skiing in Australia. (I didn't have rich parents, though)

When you are an old fart like me, what a delight to be able to say, "Course when I was skiing down the Cotopaxi glacier, back in the 2000's.... blah-di-blah... you will retain your street cred forever. Your grandchildren will frame the photos.

Go to Quito, do not pass go.

I waited for ages. I really expected Pablo "lightning" Escobar to have come right back with a pic of an Inghams brochure, hung on a nail, next to the bog roll. You just can't get the staff. Bl...y South Americans.

The solution to PWS is to go to your favourite resort in the summer. It's still the same friendly folk. Alpine walking builds up the muscles that medically counteract PWS. The end result is that you feel alpine. You have met with German/French like-mindeds. Tasted the beer.

Then, you could take palliative action. Leave a copy of the Thomsons ski brochure on the table in the bathroom, ready for every convenient occasion. Replace with First Choice in June, and Inghams in July. By September, mild panic will be setting in, if you are not yet booked.

I am content.

The first half of the sentence works for me, Wickers, cheapest is best! On the second bit, my kind wife has always said, "don't worry Dave, size isn't everything"

I'm sure this is an observation. She is very perceptive.

2 metre K2s aren't too short. Lordy, she is so gracious!

The resolution to your concerns is manufactured by companies such as Coll-Tex and Black Diamond, though you may need to eat more :D

I had to google to understand what the hell you were talking about, Skins. I have watched troops walking up hill on skins from the comfort of a chair lift, not for me my interests lie downhill.... 8) 8)

I'm with you Ian. Strictly DHO.

Dave, with the number of seasons you get out of a pair of boots, you are maybe the most guilt free of any of us

My man,
I cannot argue with this, but I will say that saving the world is not the prime driver in extending the life of my gear . Being a war baby, my thrust in life is minima/maxima/Oohh man.

By this I mean, if you have lived a life of a main meal being a jam sandwich and holes in your shoes being covered by cardboard, ski gear does not figure high in ones life, especially, if wearing the 18 year old boots, and 12 year old skis, sees you flee past most guys, except for Jan Stenmark, and a few other J2 hotshots. 8) 8)

Given that Jan has about 22 years age advantage on me, I am not overly dosed with worry.

I digress. I have serious concerns for the energy use that we consume going uphill.

What if we attached a rope round our waist and pulled the gondola up, as we skied down? That'll slow Jan down.

To 60 miles an hour. 8)

Following on Bandit's logic, if the 3Vs worked, then stay in 3Vs, but go to a different resort. Aim for an area that you covered least.

Or, the Milky Way
Or, the Schiwelt
