hoping for some action at Cairngorm, Scotland in the run up to christmas...after that, its the end of February before a trip to Chamonix.
The season starts here

I also saw the skiing on Eurosport earlier and thought the same thing!!

Dustings of snow at Cairngorm this week as well, hopefully an early start to the season here in Scotland!
all depends when Cairngorm gets a bit more snow - hoping for a December start to the season again.

In terms of a trip abroad, too many sleeps to count - looking like March before i'll get away (but you never know!!)

Difficult to get to by public transport, but if you can hire a car, Glenshee and the Lecht are both within a reasonably short drive.

The Lecht would be closer, but is a much smaller area. Glenshee would be your best bet and is probably about 2 hours drive at most. On good days, it is great.

Conditions can change quite quickly though so you may only be able to tell how good the snow is going to be a day or two beforehand. Keep an eye on the snow forecast on this site, as well as ski scotland and winter highland (the latter is updated very regularly)

there are also some good deals on Igluski at the moment, and i'm sure some of them had dates over new year. worth a look.
early skiing-where to go!?

I would say go for Tignes/Val D'Isere or Val Thorens. If Chamonix is open by then (which i think it is) I would also check that out.

There are some hostel type accomodation options there, and cheap(ish) flights with easyjet to Geneva. If you can be flexible with dates, you might be able to do that reasonably cheaply. Brilliant resort with something for everyone.

Yeah, I would head to Le Tour on your first day at least. There is a beginner slope at the bottom of the mountain, and some easy, wide blue and red runs up on the mountain which you will manage no problem. Les Houches would also be good for you guys. I would say to steer clear of Grand Montets as that is where the best skiers/boarders tend to go.

Been to Chamonix a number of times so if you have any specific questions, i'll do my best to answer them.

Otherwise, have a great time.

I dunno mate. Probably quite a few with ski patrol, pisten bully drivers etc.

I'm sure they are trying to make the very most out of this season (which is basically their best ever!), so i'm sure if it was financially viable they would be open.

Hopefully the weekend will be good, forecast looks promising at the moment.
