Stolen Skis

Would have made no differance to the insurance. Locked, Seperated or Bodygaurd they only insure if secured to a car. Bloody stupid.

Does not say what happens if someone steals the car with them on top. :)

Is there a reason you chose Geneva for a Holiday in Italy?

There are plenty of good French resorts near Geneva.

I forgot to add that the Police were next to useless, Very unhelpfull and rude.
Took over an hour to fill in the form.

I would make a note of your skis serial number as well beacause talking to the hotel I was lucky it was the start of the season.
later on they become even less helpfull keep you up to four hours and then wont even fill in the form if you dont have the skis serial numbers.

I just wish they had all been out there looking for ski theives rather than all sitting around drinking coffee.

Hi all just returned from Two weeks in MERIHELL. (I know most of you love it but its never held a place in my heart) and just thought it worth starting a thread on ski security and more importantly checking your Insurance before we all head off.

As you guessed from the Headline some low life decided to help themselves to my skis whilst away last week.

The most anoying thing for me is that I have split my skis for as long as I can remember and this is the ONE occasion when I didnt. Firtstly because I was helping out another host and so had no group or friends to split with and secondly because the rain was so torrential I couldnt see anything out of my goggles and just wanted to get inside for 5 mins.

I left them right by the door in full view for only 10 mins and they went.

Now this is where we all need to check the small print on our Insurance. I dont normally take insurance for my equipment as im lucky and get it very cheap however the woman at the insurance company was trying to upgrade me and i thought maybe if something did go missing or get lost part way through the season I would not want to wait ntill sept to replace it (this is when i get good deals on the up coming seasons gear) so i took the upgrade. Imagine my annoyance when i get back to find that for theft they are only covered if locked in a car rack secured to the car.
So in summery always split your skis, check your insurance and if you catch anybody trying to steal your gear break both the wrists for me. :)

Obviously any other suggestions most appreciated.

Im off for two weeks tom to three valles with TO.
Off to Itally on the 9th which will be Accomadation TO but make our own way out.
End of Jan probabaly France last min and big group so definatly TO.
Early Feb TO.
March on a course but travel and hotel ill book indipendent, have an apartment booked end march that i found on Ebay a few years ago and have used a few times for £250 booked up but not sure if ill have holiday to use it and then a last blast beg of April which is always last min and independently booked.

I look for voucher codes online for P&O which halfs the ferry cost normally and then i pick 2 or three lots of accomadation and then book last min with whoever will give the best price.

Never paid more than £550 for a week when doing it indipendent and thats all in lift pass as well.

I have dipped into a few other forums including a couple of other ski forums and a 'tortoise forum'.  I can honestly say that on J2ski I have never seen anything that compares to some of the outrageous or nasty posts elsewhere. Having said that I can see how new members who are not familiar with the different personalities, may be offended easily.

I looked at a tortoise forum once but I found it moved along far too slowly for my liking.

We stayed in a 5 star Hotel skied every day and have both personal performance and ski school experience teaching and shadowing.

Since then every man and his dog have jumped on the band wagon with Basi and the Canadians franchising out the courses. The prices have more than doubled and im not so sure you are gaurenteed the quality these days as its a business and there to make money rather than create the instructors of the future.

I spend around six grand over three months but that iincluded gear, course and an so much alcohol I feel sick just thinking about it however it is still the best six grand I have ever spend.

Would I do the same thing again probably not.
I would take my six grand book accomadation for a full season not just 3 months. Approach the ski school about shadowing. (most run there own personal performancce throughout the weeks FOC) and then just ski ski and ski then do the week induction and then the 2 week exams like the people that dont do a gap. You get double the amount of skiing, twice as much direct shadowing / teaching experience plus probably paid for the busy weeks helping out. Should work out cheaper as well. Which ever way its a fantastic and life changing experience. Good luck to him. Make sure he gets a proper qualification though i sat on a chair lift last year with a guy who had shelled out 8 grand on a course in canada and he came out with a canadian 2. make sure its at least a basi 2 or canadian 2 that they get at the end or its no use without doing more qualifications.

The CSIA don't franchise anything, that is absolute gash. More than doubled? Yawwn. Please don't start typing stuff in to the box before you really know what you are saying. Ta.

Ok Pablo Maybe Franchise was not the best word to use. What i meant was that Basi for instance used to only run instructor courses themselves so they were in control of quality and content but now there are a dozen companies and ski schools undertaking the gap courses and training churning out a vastly increased number of instructors and Basi do the examining at the end. I admit im not totaly in touch with the Canadian system but I think im right in saying that they work in a similar way. With regards to costs I paid £3000 for my course to do the same course now is a few quid under £7000 even allowing for inflation over the 8 years thats a lot more expensive.
