Sorry - I can't give you any tips but I had my first ever skiing holiday (in my 30's) in Kaprun at the end of March 1995 & I still remember how amazing the whole experience was. In fact I've just had a quick flick through my photo album again which has brought back lots of great memories. Have a fantastic time!
Ski hire and lessons in Les Gets.

We have always hired our skis from Nevada Sports (www.nevada-lesgets.com) & have always found them to be very helpful. Ask for Thierry, he's very accommodating & to be honest I think we've had better service there than in any other resorts I've been to.

For lessons we've always used the British Alpine Ski & Snowboard School (www.britishskischool.com) & found them to be excellent. The groups have been small & both my son & myself made great progress with them.

You'll have a great time - we've had some brilliant holidays in Les Gets :)
I agree - it is rubbish. When I look at euro prices I just pretend its a sterling price. That way, if it works out that I pay a bit less than the euro price then it's a bonus. However, if you divide the lift pass price into an hourly rate then I think it's still good value. I reckon I'll be out on the snow for about 7 hrs a day & am skiing for 8 days, which means an hourly rate of £3.82. Let's face it, what activities can you do for that price these days? It's OK Tony_H you don't have to think of any ) .

There's very little you can do at my local sports centre for less than that per hour. We're self catering, so I guess it will be pasta, pasta & more pasta, but quite frankly I can happily put up with that if it means I can still afford to go skiing!

Yes there is at least one - I've got a photo of a rack full of skis outside the shop. We had to amuse ourselves there for a couple of hours once when the gondola up to Lindarets was out of action :(

Ian, you sound like a lovely husband )

(My husband was going to organise something 'special' for my 40th birthday. Three weeks before the event, all he had done was look at cross channel ferries from Hull to Zeebrugge :( Needless to say, I took matters into my own hands)!
Les Gets Advice

Hi Brucie

I've been to Les Gets quite a few times, although with a small child in tow I can't claim to have experienced the apres ski to any great extent! The last time we stayed there was the 'no snow' season so we skied in Avoriaz every day. Apart from that, we've always had brilliant conditions.

I'm sure you'll have a great time. In case you've read a thread from a week or so ago in which one (very respected) j2skier likened the village to the car park at the Bluewater shopping centre, I can assure you it was an exaggeration of the most monumental proportions

I've only ever been there in January when it is generally quieter but I think Christmas will be much busier - but there will be lots of 'festive' things going on! As queen_sheba says, the village is small enough to try all the different bars. Have you been on www.skiclub.co.uk & read the reader reviews in the resort guides for Les Gets?

There are buses to Morzine, but I don't know how late they run in the evening - not very late I'd guess. You could always email the tourist office, I've generally found them to be very helpful. If you want me to send you some photos taken around the village, PM me your email address & I'll send them on.

I hope you do decide to stick with the forum. There is lots of useful stuff on here - as well as some complete nonsense. You'll quickly get to know the 'characters' - they make me chuckle on a daily basis

Have just booked to go to St Gervais - hope I've done the right thing - only 49 sleeps to go (gosh that seems ages).

RoseR wrote:I am sure there is another ski programme I used to watch about about 9am on a sunday morning, I think on ch4. I am sure it was in December. It was'nt ski Sunday. Really hoping its back, I used to come downstairs, make a cuppa and go back to bed to watch it.

It must have been earlier than that RoseR as I sometimes have to work on a Sunday & used to have to drag myself away from the TV by 8.20am. When not working, I used to make toast & marmalade & a cup of tea & curl up on the sofa with a fleecy blanket to watch it - it was part of my Sunday routine. Please bring it back!
When I ask my son what he's done at school, he always says "nothing".

With that in mind I suppose we'd better go skiing then!
