Short ski break on a budget?
Started by User in Ski Chatter, 12 Replies
Thanks Ross :D

Sounds like you're having an amazing time.

I didn't have much luck in finding prices for transfers by bus or train - any suggestions?

Otherwise, I can hire a car for about £190 for the week which means no waiting around and the option to go via a supermarket to stock up on food, and more importantly, wine (and beer for OH) before getting to the resort.

I had a one hour lesson on a dry slope before going on my first ski holiday. I found it very useful as when I arrived in resort I was happy moving around on skis, could snowplough stop and could just about manage a shaky turn. This helped my confidence a lot as when I tried what I'd learnt on snow it was so much easier (and more enjoyable.)

IMO, one lesson is very helpful before you go, even if only to show you how to put skis and boots on and move around in them - more than this, well I'd say probably not, but as always it's down to personal opinion. :D

Thanks for your replies everyone. :D

After a lot of searching it seems that going for a week (holidays weren’t a problem, just thought a short break would be cheaper) is probably going to be easier and less expensive - what a shame.... )

The best I can come up with at the moment is flights from Leeds/Bradford to Chambery (a bit further than Newcastle but better flight times) with Jet2, SC accommodation (which sleeps 4) in Valmenier, car hire and 6 day lift passes for £800 for two of us the last week in March.

Does this sound reasonable or has anyone seen any other deals at a similar price that may give us other options?

Thanks

Lynn

Ps. Dave, I live in Teesside (near Middlesbrough) :D

Following on from the Scotland thread, has anybody done a weekend/short break flying from the North?

Just looking for ideas at this stage, dates and destinations would be very flexible, the main factors would be to maximise our time on the slopes and keep the cost as low as possible.

Slopes wise, we are both intermediates - I ski reds and very occasionally an easier black (if that isn't a contradiction in terms??) For a couple of days it doesn't matter if the slopes are a bit limited.

Any suggestions very welcome :D

Thanks

Lynn

Thanks guys - that was actually less than I was expecting.

A late deal may be an option, as may be a weekend trip abroad, but getting anything from Newcastle might be tricky (all the best deals on flights and packages seem to be from London and getting there isn't always trivial, particularly for an early morning flight.)

Also, by the time I've added on a six day lift pass for 2 of us, ski carriage, possibly overnight accommodation in London + lunches and drinks it's still not going to be cheap. :(

A lottery ticket is needed I think... :D

Maybe, just maybe this was meant literally? The visibility isn't great...

The snow looks amazing in your other pics though, v.v.v. jealous. :(

Out of curiosity, roughly how much are the one day lift passes for the Scottish resorts? (I realise it will probably vary depending on where you are.)

I would love to do another trip to the Alps but not sure if the finances will stretch that far so considering a last minute weekend in Scotland (weather permitting) later in the season.

It'll be a long drive (5-6 hours ish from Teesside?) but may be the only option for a ski fix this year.

One other thing that caught me out last year, was trying to put my skis back on after a fall and not realising that my bindings were still closed (not sure of the correct term...???)
So, if you can't get your skis back on, this could very well be the reason :D
