Following on from the Scotland thread, has anybody done a weekend/short break flying from the North?

Just looking for ideas at this stage, dates and destinations would be very flexible, the main factors would be to maximise our time on the slopes and keep the cost as low as possible.

Slopes wise, we are both intermediates - I ski reds and very occasionally an easier black (if that isn't a contradiction in terms??) For a couple of days it doesn't matter if the slopes are a bit limited.

Any suggestions very welcome :D

Thanks

Lynn

A couple of years ago my OH and I flew to Geneva, hired a car and stayed at the youth Hostel in Tignes. They did a brilliant deal.

At the time it was Half Board and lift pass for around 50E a day. Dont know what its like now, but worth checking out I would say.

Have you looked at easyjet from Newcsatle? They are really giving away flights at the mo. If you can fly midweek in March you can get return flights to Geneva for under £50 and even cheap ones on Saturdays. Then you can hire a car (I paid £114 for week hire with Holidayautos) or go to a resort nearby via taxi or coach.

You could even hang fire on accommodation until just before leaving to get something cheap and ensure you go somewhere with good snow.

Its a bit of work googling things but can be pretty cheap. Don't know how long Easyjet fares are on promotion though.
Bon. Allez!

We nipped out to Les Gets for a weekend last week - the transfer from Geneva is short and the skiing there would suit your ability. The local pass is fairly cheap compared to many areas and the area is easily big enough for intermediates for many days. Car hire (always use the Swiss side) is reasonable despite exchange rate or there are buses. Having said that, most of the above can be said of places like Morillon, La Clusaz, St Gervais and Chamonix! I know of a reasonably priced apartment in Les Gets that's available for most of March and bits of Feb and is available for short term lets if you are interested.

This follows on from my thread about a weekend break, as I was hoping to do it on a budget, but I cant seem to get it for less than a week away on a last minute package. Even with bargain flights at 2p or £5 or whatever, i am looking at over £200 without the lift pass for 2 days skiing. i dont think its worth it.

Thanks for your replies everyone. :D

After a lot of searching it seems that going for a week (holidays weren’t a problem, just thought a short break would be cheaper) is probably going to be easier and less expensive - what a shame.... )

The best I can come up with at the moment is flights from Leeds/Bradford to Chambery (a bit further than Newcastle but better flight times) with Jet2, SC accommodation (which sleeps 4) in Valmenier, car hire and 6 day lift passes for £800 for two of us the last week in March.

Does this sound reasonable or has anyone seen any other deals at a similar price that may give us other options?

Thanks

Lynn

Ps. Dave, I live in Teesside (near Middlesbrough) :D
