Alistair, while I do not doubt any essence of your conclusions, I have a problem with how you get there. For example, it is self evident that strong torsional rigidity will grip hardpack, but ~what is maximum TR? Such a thing surely does not exist.
What does "optimal stability" mean? Unique precision? Smooth precise turns ~ on hardpack, let alone ice? Ultimate agility? what does that mean? Ultimate speed? Wow, that would be good. I'm not going near Klothoid shape!! What makes an intermediate ride like an expert, might include lessons, experience, technique, conditions........ I'm not having a go here Alistair, but I am not a fan of Ski-speak. On the other hand, I am more than willing to be educated. Until then, my £49, (when brand new), Volkls, will rip down the Merchenwiess, in 2min 40sec. I have no doubt that Klammer would break 2 min, but then he is not a fan of Ski-speak, either..... |

Hi Alien, welcome to J2ski.
While your skiing is still advancing at a quick rate, I would suggest that you hire skis. The main benefit is that you can ski 2 or 3 different pairs in your weeks hire. Cost-wise, when you deduct the ski transfer cost, plus the hassle of scooting them about, the difference is only £20/£30. You will rent a ski that is only one or two seasons old. Skiset, that advertise on this site is one option, to give you an idea of hire cost. |

Yes the lifts are open on New Years Day. The Harfenwirt is a good location, Herbert, the owner, will, no doubt, be playing his harp. You will see the fireworks from the village, it is most spectacular. It's a good hotel. Give Herbert my regards. When I worked for the ski school, we used to ski down from the top, before midnight, carrying two flaming torches each. We would first form up into the numbers of the old year, and then reform into the numbers of the New Year, all could be seen from the village. Now it is all done lower down, and more simply. There may be another firework display, a day later, in Oberau, along with a ski show ~ well worth a visit, it's all free. |

That's a bummer,Rossy, 2 winters ago, my OH broke her leg in October. She was in plaster for 6wks, and skiing at New Year ~ in a fair bit of pain, and mostly on gentle slopes.
She was skiing again in late January, able to come down anything. However, ~ this is only by way of encouragement, every incident is different. You have a good attitude to the Italian! |

I learned to draw as a method of communication in engineering. Having the principles of perspective allows me to draw Alpine pensions and barns. Keep practicing, Tino. In Zermatt, you can draw the Matterhorn every day, and have completely different pictures. Yes, much to my OH's disgust, I was on loads on times, and the lady was on just a couple of times. She was up on the balcony, but I was almost middle, front row. We have just watched it on iplayer, but are looking to quickly buy a Hard Disk DVD recorder, so we can take some DVDs off. The whole show is on channel 4 on Friday night. |

Hi Mike,
For the normal skiwelt lift pass tariffs: http://www.skiwelt.at/en/winter/normal-tariff.html For group tariffs: http://www.skiwelt.at/en/winter/the-skiwelt-group-tariffs-valid-for-20-persons-and-onwards.html As you can guess from the site title, the offer is for groups of 20 or more, and even then is only saving 6 euros. You can contact the lift operator, but might be better going through the tourist office, (both on the same site). Give them a pitch that you are considering a group holiday to the skiwelt, and what savings might be made? |

Drawing,Tino? Are you a fellow dabbler? That is my kind of weekend ~ you turn a corner, and find a surprise piece of history. My favourite city for this is Vienna.
My little weekend mission was most enjoyable ~ first time I have sung with a big choir, (or any choir for that matter!) Just watching the first half on: http://www.bbc.co.uk/proms/2010/promsinthepark/dundee.shtml We only do one choral in the first half, The Anvil Chorus, a hot little Italian number! Glad you are enjoying your visit, Tino. Mmmm, drawing, eh? |
