Trust me it's still cheaper even at the exchange rate, I work for a well known supermarket so I compare prices where ever I go, sad really, but it still works out cheaper

ah, but do you compare baskets or just prices??

I take a price in the UK then take the exchange and calculate the euro/pound, for example a bottle of wine sells in the Uk at £3.99 I bought the same bottle of wine in Calais 2008 for £1.49, in 2009 the price went up to £2.10 a bottle, although it was a long time ago since I was at school I think that is a saving of £1.89....

ok, so how much did the ferry crossing cost? how much did the fuel from Norwich cost

Atleast I have something up my sleeve to get on with though.

sorry to hear that Tony :( hope you enjoy Santorini and that something crops up soon :D

Most of the time we are shoping just for the two of us so the cost is not so bad. We always try to shop local, because we had a small shop in our village at home that was more expensive than the nearest supermarket, and has now closed down. Small shops are a great place to meet locals home and abroad.

I'll shop local if they charge reasonable prices, the trouble ski resorts don't

Bit of a generalisation Wickers, in N. we have three supermarkets, and one local shop. You can walk to all, except a ski bus to the furthest supermarket.

My favourite is the wee shop, Klingers. You can buy almost anything, there, although it's a bit like your front room, and back parlour. I learned a lot of my German in there. If you go there more than two years, you will be remembered, and they shake your hand. Beer from 2 Eu, wine from 3 Eu. Good wine 5 Eu. And then there is food, of course!

Prices cheaper than the UK in all 4 places.

But that Dave is not a general rule across the alps it all sounds very nice but supermarket prices are a lot more expensive in ski resorts, and it now comes to pass in a recession that people will not pay the inflated prices, I for one will take as much as I can with me,the point is I really don't mind paying more as I am on holiday but to be ripped off really pee's me off.

we're just the same here in blighty, go to any shop in a tourist area and expect to pay upto 10% more, it's simple economics, supply and demand. No-one likes being ripped off but as a brit we should be used to it
